The USSR team, speaking at the 1968 Winter Olympics , was made up of 74 athletes from 25 cities and towns of 5 union republics. Representatives of the Soviet Union team participated in all types of Olympic programs, except for tobogganing and bobsledding . Athletes won 13 medals (5 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze), gaining 92 points in the unofficial team standings and for the first time losing the first line to the Norwegian team (103 points), which won first place.

Soviet athletes won medals in 6 sports. In ski jumping Vladimir Belousov won the first and only gold in the history of the USSR Olympic team. Also, gold medals were brought by athletes who participated in competitions in biathlon, figure skating, speed skating and ice hockey. At the same time, in the cross-country skiing, this Olympics is the most unsuccessful in the entire history of Soviet sports, since the skiers did not manage to get the gold, and among the won prizes there were only 2 silver and 2 bronze.
