Argentina's national team is one of the most titled football teams in the world: Argentines won the World Cup twice (in 1978 and 1986 ), excelled 14 times in the America's Cup and won the Olympic tournament twice (in 2004 and 2008 ). Argentina is one of three teams (along with Brazil and France ), which won all the tournaments under the auspices of FIFA : the World Cup , the Olympic Games and the Confederations Cup ; also Argentines, as well as Brazilians, and French, at the same time have victories in their continental championship .

Argentina is known for its rivalry with the teams of Brazil, Uruguay , Germany and England because of the historical confrontations with each other throughout football history.

The greatest number of matches for the national team played Javier Mascherano - 147 games; the best scorer of the team - Lionel Messi - 68 goals [1] .

As of July 14, 2019, the national team of Argentina in [[FIFA national team ranking | 1 ranking and in the continental - 1st [2] .

The current captain of the national team since 2011 - Barcelona striker Lionel Messi [4] .

The Argentina national team played their first match with the Uruguay team on May 16, 1901 and completed it in their favor 3: 2. According to another version, the match took place on July 20, 1902 and ended with the victory of the Argentines with a score of 6: 0.

Until 1928, the Argentina national team played only within South America . The first match outside the home continent the team played in Lisbon with a team of Portugal (0: 0).

Argentina national team participated in 42 of 46 tournaments in the America's Cup. She did not participate in Peru in 1939, in Brazil in 1949, in Peru in 1953, and in Colombia in 2001. Argentina is the second national team in the number of conquered titles (14, the national team of Uruguay has 15 titles). Of the 175 matches she held, 112 were won, 31 were lost and 32 were drawn.
