Submission (Philosophy)

Representation ( repraesentatio , German: Vorstellung ) is a sensory image of objects given to consciousness, accompanied, in contrast to perception , by a feeling of lack of what is represented. Distinguish representations of memory and imagination [1] . Representation is also called the corresponding mental process .

In a broader sense, the word representation means any state of consciousness reproduced by memory: for example, a disappeared feeling can be reproduced by memory as a representation . Thus, representation denotes a secondary, reproduced state of consciousness, therefore, from the primary (sensation, feeling, etc.).

Representation is the term psychological and logical .

In logic, representation is distinguished from concept ; the initial idea is formed completely involuntarily, being a simple trace of primary mental states; in the so-called general idea , the work of thought is already noticeable, for it corresponds to a number of similar objects. Logic distinguishes between several types of representations (general, abstract, etc.) and distinguishes them from concepts, and by general representations he calls a group of mutable memories of similar objects; concepts, on the other hand, are characterized by certainty and constancy.

The psychological view of representation is presented in the doctrine of associations and in the doctrine of memory in general.

Concept History

Kant in “Critique of the Power of Judgment” defines the beautiful through a sense of pleasure from the performance [2] . Moreover, the idea is necessarily in the imagination ( Einbildungskraft ) and can be identical to the idea [3] .

Schopenhauer made a “representation” in the title of his work “The World as a Will and a Representation” (1819)

Of particular importance is the term representation in the philosophy and psychology of Herbart , who in the representation sees the basic fact of mental life . “ Perceptions ,” says Herbart, “become forces, resisting each other. This happens when several opposing views come together. ” ("Foundations of Psychology", I gl., § 10). Based on the position that representations are independent forces, Herbart builds a kind of statics and dynamics of representations.
