European Men's Handball Championship 2002

The 5th European Men's Handball Championship was held from January 25 to February 3, 2002 in six cities in Sweden . For the first time in the history of the European championships, the champion title was won by the hosts of the competition. For the national team of Sweden, this victory was the third in a row and the fourth for all the time of her performances in tournaments of the strongest teams of the continent.

The national team of Sweden as the winner of the previous European championship and the team of the organizing country of the championship, as well as the teams of Spain , Russia , France and Slovenia , who took places from the 2nd to the 5th at Euro 2000, were exempted from the qualifying games.
