Tsai Yuanpei

Cai Yuanpei ( Chinese 蔡元培 , Pinyin : Cài Yuánpéi ) ( January 11, 1868 , Shaoxing , Zhejiang , Qing Dynasty - March 5, 1940 , Hong Kong ) - Chinese statesman, scholar , translator and teacher . Minister of Education of the Republic of China , founder and first president of the Academy of Sinica ( Eng. Academia Sinica ), rector of Peking University [1] [2] .

Biography

Born January 11, 1868 in Shaoxing County, Zhejiang Province, Great Qing State in the family of a bank employee.

At 22, he received a jinshi degree and became a member of the Hanlin Academy .

In 1907 he went to Germany and entered the University of Leipzig , where he studied philosophy , aesthetics , anthropology and experimental psychology . He was engaged in translations from German into Chinese .

In 1911 he returned to China.

From January 3 to July 14, 1912 he was Minister of Education of the Republic of China. He played a decisive role in the reform of education in 1912, contributed to the development of female education in China. He resigned due to the disapproval of the policy of Yuan Shikai .

In 1913 he left for France , where he studied French , and also helped organize the Sino-French Educational Association.

In 1916 he returned to China, where he took over the post of rector of Peking University , which he held until 1926.

In 1928, he took part in the creation of the Sinik Academy and became its first president.

In 1936 he fell ill and moved away from public life.

Passed away on March 5, 1940 in British Hong Kong [1] [2] .
