Biography
Born in Pearl County of Zhejiang Province [3] , according to other sources - in Shanghai [4] .
In 1948 he joined the Chinese Communist Party .
In 1966 he was one of the initiators of the Cultural Revolution . He was a member of the Cultural Revolution Group under the CPC Central Committee . Together with his wife, Mao Zedong, Jiang Qing , as well as Zhang Chunqiao and Wang Hongwen, were members of the Chinese Communist Party leaders, known as the “Gang of Four,” which was later accused of counter-revolutionary activities during the Cultural Revolution.
With the 9th Congress of the CPC in April 1969, he was a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the CPC, and with the 10th Congress in August 1973 he retained membership in the Politburo, responsible for ideological work.
After the death of Mao Zedong, a power struggle broke out in China, which resulted in the arrest of Yao Wenyuan and other members of the Gang of Four in 1976 . In 1977, Yao Wenyuan was expelled from the party, in 1981 he was sentenced to 20 years in prison and five years in political rights. [5]
Yao Wenyuan is the only one of the “Gang of Four” to have served his entire sentence [6]. He was released in 1996 and settled in Shanghai, where he began to write a book. [7] .
Died of diabetes in Shanghai [8] December 23, 2005.
