Station Description

Creation History

Image of the station on a 1950 postage stamp

The station was opened in 1950 as part of the Kursk Park-Culture section, after commissioning of which there were 35 stations in the Moscow Metro. The name is on October Square (now Kaluga ), near which the station is located. The station was conceived as a solemn requiem for those who fell in the Great Patriotic War. The station pavilion is a grand triumphal arch, decorated on the outside with bas-relief figures of men and women, dressed in the form of the Soviet army of war time.

It should be noted that the theme of Victory has become central to the post-war phase of development of the Moscow metro. At the same time, only the author of the project of the Oktyabrskaya station, L. Polyakov, managed to create almost a temple space where rows of torches lead to the apse with the proposed altar - a niche with a blue sky designed to reflect the country's “bright future”. Never before, according to experts, the design of the station so appealed to the examples of temple architecture of the West and antiquity and at the same time did not resemble the three-nave basilicas of the period of early Christianity [2] .

Exterior decor and decoration

The station has a ground lobby overlooking Leninsky Prospekt and looks like a pavilion with arched passages. Since 1990 , the lobby has been integrated into the new building of the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys . The lobby is decorated with bas-reliefs depicting two fanfarists; the bas-reliefs are illuminated by lamps in the form of columns.

Pylons are faced with gray marble . The track walls are covered with yellowish ceramic tiles and decorated with wreath tiles . The flooring is gray and red granite ; along the perimeter of the central hall there is a patterned insert of alternating strips of dark and light marble . In the cash and escalator halls there are bas-reliefs by G.I. Motovilov , depicting warriors with weapons, battle flags of the Soviet army and girls, who are the personification of the Glory. The arches of the central and apron halls are decorated with medallions depicting Soviet soldiers. At the end of the central hall is an arch, the space behind which, fenced off by a wrought-iron grate, is illuminated by a bluish light and symbolizes the post-war world. Next to the arch are two powerful lamp columns. On the pylons there are torch-shaped lamps made of anodized aluminum by A. Damsky. [3] The design is similar to the Pushkinskaya station of the St. Petersburg metro, also decorated by L. M. Polyakov.

The station code is 075. In March 2002 , the passenger traffic at the entrance was 52.7 thousand people.

Reconstruction of the lobby

January 3, 2010 was closed for the reconstruction of the lobby of the station. For the first time, escalators were completely replaced with new E55T escalators with stainless steel balustrades. Repair work was carried out on the lobby of the station: the granite flooring was replaced, the marble wall cladding was updated, the famous bas-reliefs were restored, the Empire stucco molding over the arches was painted. At the same time, the architectural appearance of the lobby was greatly changed [4] . The original lamps and floor lamps were replaced by new ones, and to save on the production of escalators on the balustrades, the “torch” lamps were replaced by ordinary cylindrical ones. Modern turnstiles of the UT-2005 type are mounted in the lobby. New ticket offices have been built.

The reconstructed lobby opened on November 15, 2010 . On the opening day, at all ticket offices of the Koltsevaya line and at the Oktyabrskaya station, Kaluga-Riga line holiday tickets were sold for two trips with an original design dedicated to this event [5] .

Interesting Facts

  • Until June 6, 1961 it was called "Kaluga". It is worth noting that the station, now called Kaluga , is located far from Kaluga Square, in another district of Moscow, which sometimes leads to confusion.
  • At the very end of the station there is an empty apse with the blue sky shown at the top, closed by a solemn empire - style fence. The architect Polyakov, the author of the project, believed that he had invented a new tool to combat the “sensation of the underground” [2] : the brightly lit wall and the blue upper part of the apse were intended, according to his idea, to create the illusion of being on the surface, making passengers forget about that they are at a 30-meter depth. However, his version of the “bright future behind bars” became a target for many generations of wits. It is amazing how the government commission missed a project so dubious in terms of censorship.
  • In 1956 , in the Leningrad Metro , according to the design of Polyakov , the Pushkinskaya station was opened, which was very similar to Oktyabrskaya. Instead of the lattice in the apse is a statue of A. S. Pushkin [2] .
  • In 1995, the journalist Valery Hiltunen, relying on the existing name of the station, proposed renaming all the stations of the Moscow metro ring line in accordance with the months of the year [2] .
