Biography
Soichi Noguchi was born on April 15, 1965 in Yokohama . At the University of Tokyo, he received bachelor's degrees ( 1989 ) and a master's degree ( 1991 ) in aviation technology. Then he worked in the aerodynamics group of the Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries research and development department, where he performed aerodynamic calculations for commercial engines [1] .
In May 1996, he was enrolled in the 16th NASA astronaut squad .
Soichi Noguchi was supposed to go on its first flight in March 2003 on the Atlantis shuttle under the STS-114 program, but the crews were reorganized due to the death of the Columbia space shuttle. Thus, for the first time, Soichi Noguchi flew into space on July 26, 2005, together with the crew of the Discovery shuttle, under the program with the same STS-114 number, called "Return to Flight". During the flight, he made three spacewalks for the ongoing repair of the station . This flight lasted until August 9, 2005.
In the second flight to the ISS he went on December 21, 2009 as a flight engineer of the Soyuz TMA-17 spacecraft. He stayed on board the station as part of the long-term crews of the ISS-22 and ISS-23 . On June 2, 2010, Soichi Noguchi returned to Earth on the Soyuz TMA-17 spacecraft. The flight duration was 163 days 5 hours 32 minutes and 45 seconds.
In November 2018, JAXA announced the selection of a member of the long-term expedition ISS-62 / -63 for a duration of approximately six months. The start of training for the expedition is scheduled for November 2017, launch at the end of 2019. The planned manned ship at the time of the announcement is not known [2] .
