Distribution and Ecology
The species range covers Sakhalin , the Kuril Islands and Japan .
It grows on rocky slopes, along sea sandy beaches.
Botanical Description
The rhizome is thin, woody, often creeping.
Stems 5–20 cm tall, single or several, straight or raised, more or less densely hairy from long hairs.
Lower leaves up to 4 cm long, on long petioles . Upper leaves with short petioles or sessile, leaf blades 2–4 cm long, 1–1.5 cm wide, triangular-ovate, ovate-oblong or lanceolate, biconcave along the margin, cirrus and separately dentate-lobed, with a truncated or weakly expressed wedge-shaped base, sometimes unclear heart-shaped, hairless or more or less long-haired.
Flowers in thick brushes , with fruits lengthening, on pedicels several times larger than the corolla and box; bracts in the lower part of the inflorescence are similar to stem leaves, the upper ones are whole-marginal, lanceolate or lobate-oblong. Calyx with lanceolate or scapular lobes, glandular; a nimbus with a diameter of about 1.5 cm, blue, sometimes white or red; three corolla ovate, one round ovate, all acute. Stamens are one and a half to two and a half times greater than or almost equal to the corolla; anthers about 1 mm long, heart-shaped diverging.
Capsule 6–7 (up to 10) mm long, 3-5 mm wide, slightly narrowed upward, with a 1-2 mm long notch, with lobes diverging at right angles; box nests contain about 10 seeds. Seeds with a diameter of about 0.5 mm, ovoid, flat, obtuse at the apex, sharp, smooth at the base.
It blooms in June - July.
