District History
In 1799 , the second city Kazan cemetery was opened, to which in 1811 the rectangular territory of the Exaltation of the Cross Exaltation Monastery was blocked from the south. According to the plan of 1881, Monastery Square (modern Lyadova ) was determined. The Big Arzamassky tract (modern Gagarin Avenue ) began to be built up from the beginning of the 20th century.
From the south, to Nizhny Novgorod, the border of which was Napolnaya Street ( Belinsky Street since 1911 ), urban pasture land adjoined, and since 1839 it housed state wine warehouses (the modern Start / Trade Center Start) and private brick factories. In 1866, 4 rectangular quarters of timber depots were designed behind the Peter and Paul Cemetery . In 1881, two rows of quarters were designed behind Napolnaya for future development - a total of 25 new streets to the modern Genkina street. In memory of the 100th anniversary of the birth of A.S. Pushkin since 1899, the Pushkin Garden was designed. [2]
In 1916, a new Red Cemetery was built for the Old Believers north of the already existing Bugrovsky monastery, after 1917 it became a citywide one. Currently, it is the oldest existing cemetery in Nizhny Novgorod.
In 1944, the territory of the district belonged to the Zhdanovsky and Voroshilovsky districts, and until 1970 it was part of the Prioksky district , on December 9, 1970, the modern Soviet district was allocated from the latter, and the former Soviet district was renamed Nizhny Novgorod .
