Description

Mosquitoes of medium size (length 6-10 mm), legs are long, proboscis is short. Larvae are translucent with a fusiform body; active predators, feed on small crustaceans ( daphnia , cyclops ) and young larvae of other mosquitoes; usually live in the water column, rarely sink to the bottom; larvae of different species of coretre live in large deep lakes, small swamp and peat or rich in humus and silt water bodies, as well as in puddles. Larvae of some species make vertical diurnal migrations in reservoirs, while other species constantly stay at the water surface [5] . Adult individuals are found in the grass along the banks of ponds; not bloodsuckers [6] .

Usage

Larvae are used as live food for aquarium fish. They are sold in pet stores and animal markets live and can be stored for a long time in a cool place (for example, in a refrigerator). They can also be contained in well- aerated water, and are not demanding on its chemical composition (even withstand the presence of chlorine ).

Classification

The genus includes 43 modern and three extinct species [7] .
