The Hugo Award for Best Novel ( Eng. Hugo Award for Best Novel ) has been awarded annually since 1953 at the World Contest of Science Fiction Lovers “ Worldcon ”, except for 1954 and 1957, for the best works written in the science fiction or fantasy genre and published or translated into English in the previous calendar year [note 1] . The work of art is determined by the organizers of the award as a novel if its text contains 40,000 or more words. The laureates are awarded a statuette depicting a rocket taking off [1] .

Nominees and winners are selected by registered participants of the Worldcon convention, the evening presentation of which is its central event. The selection process is carried out by the method of preferential voting with five nominees, excluding the situation with a tied result. The bulletins indicate the five most nominated jury members of this year’s works, and the number of applicants for the award is unlimited. From 1953 to 1958, only the novels that took the first place were taken into account, and it was only since 1959 that all five candidates began to be included in the chronicle [2] . “Worldcon” events are usually held closer to the beginning of September and are held annually in different cities around the world [3] [4] .

Most of the awards in this nomination were given to Robert Heinlein , Lois Bujold , Isaac Asimov , Vernor Vinge and Connie Willis . Robert Heinlein was nominated 11 times, received a record five awards. Lois Bujold nominated 10 times, received four awards. Isaac Asimov was nominated 6 times, winning 3 times. Vernor Vinge and Connie Willis were nominated 5 times and won 3 prizes each.
