Chuvashia in philately

The first stamp about Chuvashia from the 1933 series “Peoples of the USSR ” ( CFA [ ITC “Mark” ] No. 431)

Chuvashia in philately is a collection of philatelic materials ( postage stamps , stamps , etc.) dedicated to Chuvashia or thematically associated with it.

Short Description

Chuvashia, its history, life and famous people are reflected on some postage stamps and other philatelic materials of the pre-revolutionary era, the Soviet Union and the Russian Federation , as well as a number of other states.

The Ministry of Communications of the USSR and the Post of Russia published postage stamps, art stamped and unmarked postal envelopes , the subjects of which were related to Chuvashia.

Collective interest in the development of the Chuvash theme may also be related calendar , franking , preferential and special postmarks .

Prewar period

There is some information about the early development of the postal service in the territory of Chuvashia. So, in 1820, in Tsivilsk , on the Moscow - Kazan highway , the first post station was opened. [one]

Zemstvo Mail

Mark of the USSR (1970): building of the House of Soviets of the Chuvash ASSR ( CFA [ Mark "ITC" ) No. 3901)

In 1867, Zemsk post office was established in Alatyr district of Simbirsk province (now Alatyr district of Chuvashia ). Zemsky postal stamps of 1 and 2 kopeks were issued for local postal needs. They had a rectangular frame of typographic signs and the inscription "Alatyrskaya Zemsk post." One-mark brand has survived only in triplicate and is a rarity . At the same time, a significant number of counterfeits of both brands are common [2] .

It is known that when the collectors appealed to the Alatyrsky Zemstvo with a request to supply them with marks of this county, the officials of the council refused them, referring to the purely local purpose of the Zemstvo signs of postal payment. This was probably one of the reasons why Alatyr Zemsky stamps are extremely rare [3] .

  Soviet period

In Soviet times, there were three postage stamps directly dedicated to Chuvashia:

  • 1933 - “ Chuvashi ”, the mark of the highest nominal value of 35 kopecks in the series “Peoples of the USSR ” [4] , circulation of 150 thousand, artist S. Novsky ( TsFA [ Mark ” ) No. 431 [5] ;
  • 1960 - “ Chuvash ASSR . Cheboksary ”, from the series“ Capitals of Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republics ”, face value 40 kopecks, circulation 2 million, artist N. Kruglov , engraving I. Mokrousova ( CFA [ ITC“ Mark ” ] No. 2431) [6] ;
  • 1970 - “Chuvash ASSR. Government House in Cheboksary ”, from the series“ 50th anniversary of autonomous Soviet socialist republics ”, face value 4 kopecks, circulation 5 million, artist Y. Kosorukov, engraving I. Mokrousov ( CFA [ Mark“ ITC ” ] No. 3901) [7] .

In addition, post miniatures were released, on which renowned natives of the Chuvash land were captured, including the legendary commander of the Civil War Vasily Chapaev (born in Budaika ) and twice Hero of the Soviet Union , cosmonaut Andrian Nikolayev (born in Shorshely ).
