Born in a farm laborer's family.

Member of the Gulaypolsky group of anarchists since 1917 , member of the Black Guard. In 1918 - commander of the headquarters battalion and the Gulaypol detachment. From March to June 1919 - the head of the garrison of Berdyansk . From September to December 1919, he was commander of the Gulaypol infantry regiment. [one]

Since July 1920 - Member of the Council of Revolutionary Rebels of Ukraine (Makhnovists) and assistant commander. July 27, 1919 participated in the liquidation of the chieftain N. A. Grigoriev in the village of Sentovo. He personally shot the bodyguard of N. A. Grigoriev when he tried to shoot Makhno . On December 2, 1919, he commanded a group of counterintelligence officers during the execution of Mikhail Polonsky (commander of the 3rd Crimean regiment of the RPAU ), who was convicted of a plot for the Bolshevik coup in parts of the RPAU. He was categorically against the signing of the Military-Political Agreement between the Government of the Ukrainian SSR and the Army of Makhno on October 16, 1920 . The coachman did not believe in the sincerity of the Bolsheviks.

During the operation to occupy Crimea, he was appointed commander of the special Crimean group of forces of the Council of Revolutionary Rebels of Ukraine (Makhnovists). On November 8, 1920, the RPAU Crimean Corps forced Sivash and entered the Lithuanian Peninsula in the rear of the Wrangel Perekop fortifications. On November 9, in a battle near Lake Bezymyannoye, the Crimean corps of Karetnik defeated the five thousandth horse corps of General Barbovich .

On November 23, 1920, the headquarters of the Crimean group was awarded the order of MV Frunze No. 00149 / psh, which stated: “All units of the former rebel army located in Crimea should immediately be included in the 4th army, whose Revolutionary Military Council is entrusted with their reformation ... “The general meeting of the commanders and the headquarters of the group refused to this, explaining that in peacetime the Crimean corps was subordinate to the headquarters in Gulyaypol , and that paragraph 1 of the military agreement was violated by this order. In response to this, on November 24, S. Karetnik and the beginning of the year were called to Frunze headquarters. headquarters of the Crimean group P. Gavrilenko . They hesitated for a long time, and then decided to go, taking precautions and leaving A.S. Marchenko and Taranovsky in their place .
