Biography

Presumably, Thomei had a rather notable origin and, as a child, gained access to the imperial court. He achieved significant success in poetry and music, became a member of the Poetic Academy ( Vakadokoro , Japanese Poetry Department). His work has been highly recognized by experts; He was among the best poets and musicians of his time.

However, at the age of thirty, having failed to get the desired hereditary position of the head of a Shinto temple, he retired from the courtyard and moved to the Kyoto area , refusing to return to the office of Vakadokoro.

Approximately twenty years later, Thomei became a Buddhist monk under the new name Ren-in and settled in a cell on Toyama Mountain, where he wrote his famous "Cell Notes" (literally - " Square Sazheni Notes "). According to the author's own instructions, this work was completed on May 2, 1212 .

Tömey died on June 8, 1216, at the age of 62.

Russian translation

The translation of the “Notes from the Cell” into Russian was done by the prominent Soviet orientalist H. Konrad and was published twice (in 1921 and 1927 ) with his comments and extensive articles.

In 1979, this translation, comments, and several abbreviated articles were included in the form of a supplement to a book called “ Ise monogatari ”, published by the publishing house “ Nauka ” in the series “ Literary monuments ”.
