The main pharmacy is a healthcare institution formed by Peter the Great from the Pharmaceutical Order .
In 1700-1744, it was located in the building of the Moscow City Hall on Red Square . From about 1737 until 1791, it was located in the former estate of Admiral F.M. Apraksin on Mokhovaya Street . In addition, since the 17th century, the pharmacy owned the Pharmaceutical Garden - a piece of land on the banks of the Neglinnaya River above the Borovitsky Bridge.
The duties of the Main Pharmacy included not only the sale of medicines to the public, but also the purchase of medicines abroad and the supply of pharmacies in other cities (St. Petersburg, Tobolsk). The duties of the Main Pharmacy also included the supply of medicines to units of the army.
For the pharmacy in China, special porcelain dishes with the state emblems and monograms of Peter I were ordered (preserved in the collection of the Historical Museum ).
The pharmacy premises in the town hall were appreciated by contemporaries: the Dutchman Cornelis van Bruin found it necessary to mention the painted interior of the pharmacy, the existence of a “pantry of medicinal herbs, a laboratory, a library, rooms for a doctor and a pharmacist”. The Danish Ambassador Just Jul , who visited the pharmacy in 1710, gave a commendable review about the pharmacy:
It truly can be considered one of the best pharmacies in the world, both in the sense of the vastness of the room, and in relation to drugs, the order reigning in it, and the grace of jugs for medicines.
