The first line-up of the group included, in addition to them, guitarist Anthony Phillips , bass player Mike Rutherford and drummer Chris Stewart. Only two of the first members of the group, Banks and Rutherford remain in its composition until today. The remaining participants repeatedly changed. The first to leave the group was drummer Chris Stewart. He took part in recording only one track from the debut album From Genesis to Revelation , after which he was replaced by John Silver. Silver also left the band before recording the second Trespass album, and John Mayhew took his place. However, even before the release of this album, he left Genesis, deciding not to continue his musical career. Together with Mayhew, unable to withstand numerous frictions within the group, guitarist Anthony Phillips left the group.
In 1971, these musicians were replaced by drummer Phil Collins and guitarist Steve Hackett . The resulting composition, considered the classic composition of the group, lasted until 1975 , releasing 4 albums. In May 1975, the group left its leader Peter Gabriel, who decided to pursue a solo career. His place as the main vocalist of the group was taken by drummer Collins, who had already performed solo vocal parts in some songs. Since then, invited musicians have invariably performed with the Genesis group, since Collins could not sing all the vocal parts and play the drums at the same time. About a year later, Steve Hackett also left the band and began to perform solo. The remaining members of the group did not invite another guitarist to replace him. During the concerts, he was replaced by session musician Daryl Sturmer, and on studio recordings, Rutherford began to perform both bass and guitar parts on his own. Thus, the group turned into a trio, having existed in this form for more than 15 years and releasing 5 studio albums.
After the release of the album " We Can't Dance " in 1991, all members of the group concentrated on solo projects, and in 1996 Phil Collins officially left the group. In 1997, Banks and Rutherford decided to experiment, inviting Ray Wilson, a former member of the Stiltskin group, as the main vocalist. With his participation, the band's latest studio album Calling All Stations was recorded. However, this album did not have commercial success and was subjected to harsh criticism. After the tour in support of the album, it was announced that the group would break up. After that, for 9 years, the Genesis group did not actually exist.
In 2007 , almost 40 years after the band was formed, Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford reunited for a concert tour of Europe and North America . During the tour, they were again joined by guitarist Daryl Sturmer and drummer Chester Thompson, who have periodically worked with the group since the 1970s [1] [2] .
