History

The diocese was formed after the creation of the Ivano-Ascension province in 1918 . The exact date of the founding of the Ivanovo-Ascension diocese is unknown (there is no document that would establish the exact date of the creation of the diocese). The first administrator of the Ivanovo-Ascension diocese, who ruled it in 1920-1922, was Bishop Hierofei (Pomerantsev) , later a renovationist metropolitan [2] .

On March 4, 1923, Vasily (Preobrazhensky) , bishop of Kinesham, vicar of the Kostroma diocese was appointed bishop of Ivanovo-Voznesensky vicar of the Vladimir diocese . On March 22 of the same year, he was arrested. On September 21, 1923, Augustine (Belyaev) was consecrated bishop of Ivanovo-Voznesensky. The period of his administration of the Ivano-Ascension Diocese continued from his release in August 1924 until his second arrest in 1926.

As an independent Ivanovo-Ascension diocese was probably formed in 1929 .

On February 1, 1933, by the decision of the Provisional Patriarchal Holy Synod in connection with the renaming of Ivanovo-Voznesensk to Ivanovo and Ivanovo-Voznesenskaya oblast to Ivanovo oblast, the Ivanovo-Voznesenskaya diocese was renamed Ivanovo [3] .

Most of the churches were demolished in the “Homeland of the First Council ”, while others, after the destruction of bell towers, domes and interior decoration, were used for household purposes. Only 7 temples located on the former outskirts of the city have survived. In 1940, the last temple, the Transfiguration Cathedral, was closed in Ivanovo, and a stable was built there. Services in it resumed only in 1944.

After the transfer of the Sokolsky District of the Ivanovo Region to the Nizhny Novgorod Region , by decision of the Holy Synod of December 26, 1995, the parishes located in the Sokolsky District were transferred to the composition of the Nizhny Novgorod Diocese .

Since 1999, the Ivanovo-Ascension Theological School was operating, transformed in 2002 by a theological seminary .

On March 13, 2002, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, after hearing a report from the Archbishop of Ivanovo and Kinesham, Ambrose, decided to rename the diocese into "Ivanovo-Ascension and Kinesham" [4] .

On June 7, 2012, the Shuy and Kineshem dioceses were separated from the diocese with the inclusion of them and the Ivanovo-Ascension diocese in the newly formed Ivanovo Metropolis [1] .
