Description

Pine siskin reaches a length of 13 cm, has a brownish plumage with a pale underside, thin brownish and wide yellow stripes on the wings and yellow spots at the base of the tail. The male is often more yellowish. The tail is thymus.

Habitat

Pine siskin lives in coniferous forests, parks and meadows in North America, from Alaska to the Mexican mountains. Northern populations winter in the south.

Lifestyle

Outside the mating season, birds unite in flocks of up to hundreds of individuals. They feed on the seeds of birches, alders and cedars, as well as insects and buds, which they find on the ground or on trees.

Reproduction

Pine siskin nests in small colonies. A cup-shaped nest on a coniferous tree made of grass, roots and moss is lined from the inside with thistle fluff, animal hair and feathers. The female incubates a clutch of 3-4 eggs almost continuously and almost does not leave the nest. At this time, the male supplies her with food.
