Originally from Aquitaine . Studied in Bourdigal (modern Bordeaux ). At first he was a lawyer. Upon the death of his wife, in 392, he abandoned the profession of a lawyer, and, under the influence of Bishop Martin of Tours and Peacock from Nola , he chose the life of a hermit and retired to a monastery near Beziers . In 409 he moved to Marseille . Having proclaimed himself a pelagian , he soon repented of this and condemned himself to eternal silence.
Proceedings
Compiled a detailed life of Martin of Tours (until 397). Martin is also the subject of the Epistles, and especially the Dialogues (c. 404).
Based on the works of Eusebius of Caesarea and Jerome , he wrote “History” (“Historia”), or “The Holy Chronicle” (“Chronica sacra”), in 2 books, which, starting the story from the creation of the world , bring it to the consulate of Stilicho , that is, until 410 years. The Chronicle is an important source on the history of Arianism in Gaul . In the Middle Ages , the Chronicle served as a tool for studying history.
He also wrote two dialogues, which are among the most ancient sources of information about monastic life in the West. They enjoyed great respect in the Middle Ages and had a significant impact on the hagiography of this period.
Sulpicius wrote in good good Latin. For the elegance of style, he was compared with Sallust .
