Biography

Corrigan received a Catholic education. In 1973, she traveled to the USSR , where she took part in a film on religion in a communist society. On August 10, 1976, her three nephews were accidental victims of a gunfight between the British military and the IRA militants (the car of one of the IRA militants Danny Lennon, mortally wounded by the British military, crushed the children to death). Meyrid's mother and children, Anna Maguire, committed suicide in New Zealand in 1980.

The death of his nephews was a turning point in the life of Corrigan. Shocked by what happened, she, together with Betty Williams , an occasional witness to this tragedy, organizes a peaceful march against violence in Northern Ireland. Soon they, together with the journalist Chiaran McKeon, create the Community of Peaceful People , whose activities were noted in the same year by the Nobel Committee. In 1978, all three of the community’s founders resigned to allow new activists to express themselves.

After that, carrying out peacekeeping activities, Corrigan visited more than 25 countries of the world, met with many political and religious leaders. In 1990, she was awarded the Pacem in Terris Prize. In 1993, she traveled with 6 other Nobel laureates to Thailand , trying to infiltrate Myanmar and organize a protest rally against the arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi , the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

Opposing the blockade of the Gaza Strip, in May 2010, Corrigan escorted the Freedom Flotilla on a flight to the Gaza Strip [1] . Israel forbade her from entering the country for 10 years and deported her after she landed at the Tel Aviv airport in October of that year. In March 2014, Corrigan, along with a group of fellow human rights defenders, was detained at Cairo Airport and expelled from Egypt [2] .

Participated in the movement against the war in Iraq. She spoke in support of the Occupy movement , Julian Assange and Bradley Manning.

About Barack Obama Prize Award

Corrigan said on this occasion that the Obama Prize was awarded “undeservedly”, since he had not yet proved “ that he is serious about the Middle East, that he will put an end to the war in Afghanistan and will solve many other problems ” [3] .
