Biography

Stanley Torrentine was born on April 5, 1934 in Pittsburgh, PA. His father was a tenor saxophonist who played in a band called Savoy Sultans. Elder brother Tommy Turrentine was a jazz trumpeter who played with many famous musicians.

The first instrument of Terrentine was the cello, later he switched to the tenor saxophone. His first professional job was a tour with the blues and R&B band band leader Lowell Fulson. The famous Ray Charles also went to this group. At this time, Stanley was heavily influenced by Illinois Jacques.

After serving in the army, in 1959, Stanley Torrentyne joined the Max Roach group, playing there with his brother Tommy. He also played with keyboardist Shirley Scott, whom he married in 1960 (they divorced in the early 1970s).

In 1960, Torrentine began recording as a session musician on the Blue Note jazz label, playing mostly soul jazz.

The first recording of Stanley Torrentyne was at the Dizzy Reece session, and he later recorded as accompanist for organist Jimmy Smith.

Torrentine recorded his first album, Look Out, on Blue Note with the Horace Parlan trio. In the same year, he recorded the first of a series of albums called South Bend with an Indiana trio of Three Sounds.

The 1970 album Sugar (Sugar) is considered one of the best, including Salt Song (Salt song) and Don't Mess with Mister T (Do not mess with Mr. T).

Stanley Torrentine lived in Fort Washington, Maryland, from the early 90s until his death. He died of a stroke in New York on September 12, 2000 and is buried in a cemetery in Pittsburgh.
