Club History

Early years

The first team of the city of Korca was created on April 15, 1909 under the name “Vlaseria” by an Albanian politician and poet Gile Mosi , and is the oldest football club in Albania.

During the 1920s and 1922s , the football associations of Perparimi and Sport Club Korca appeared in the city, in 1923 Spresa appeared on the initiative of the . In 1925, the club was given the name Skanderbeg in honor of the national hero of Albania Skanderbeg . By this time, football had become popular among the townspeople who used every free field for a football game. On this basis, many urban areas have tried to create their own small teams. Zhgaba Society was created in 1926 , and a year later yard teams appeared: Leka i Madh , Pirro , Brekverdhit , Zjarri , Tigri and Diamanti . Despite the diversity of football teams in the region, Skanderberg remained the main football power of the city of Korca . [one]

From 1930 to the present

The team first took part in the Albanian Super League in the 1930 season , from which the club’s tournament history begins. At this moment, the whole city supported its own team, which helped Skenderbeu, along with other eminent clubs in Albania, such as Vlazniya and Tirana , gain a solid reputation in the Albanian championship. In the 1930 season , the team took the second place in the championship for the first time in history, settling after Tirana. [2] , having won his first championship only in 1933 , bypassing 2 points to Blazniya. [3] [4]

Skenderbeu repeatedly became a finalist of the national cup in , and , but invariably lost in decisive matches, and as a result was never able to win a trophy. Becoming the winner of the in the 1975/76 season and in , the club left the Major League again in 2008 . However, already in the team returned to the Super League , and from that moment never once left the country's top division.

On May 8, 2011, Skenderbeu, 78 years after their last success in the national championship, won their second league title in their history. [4] Thanks to the successful work of the club’s management, in particular, the efforts of Czech specialist and club president Agim Zeko, the team defended the championship title the next season , winning two final rounds. [5] Coaches and Aleko Pilika, who worked with the first team and the youth team, also played an important role in the club’s history. [one]

In 2013, the team won their first Albanian Super Cup , beating the Lyachi club in the penalty shootout . [6]

Since the 2010/11 season, the team has won the Albanian Football Super League six times in a row: in the 2010/11 , 2011/12 , 2012/13 , 2013/14 , 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons. [7]

In the 2015/16 season , Skenderbeu became the first participant in the group stage of the European Cups , as well as the first Albanian club to break into the group stage of the European Cup tournament.

Disqualifications

On June 6, 2016, an official notice from UEFA was sent to the club’s office stating that the team was suspended from European Cup matches for the 2016/17 season due to suspected violations of the Fair Play rules and possible participation of the club in UEFA- sponsored match- fixing [8 ] .

After the expiration of the period of ineligibility, contractual matches with the club continued in the 2017/18 Europa League , and on March 30, 2018, UEFA suspended Skenderbeu for 10 years from participation in European competitions and imposed a fine of 1 million euros [9] .
