In 1910 he entered the engineering and shipbuilding school in Moscow , becoming the third in the competition, but the director of the school considered that "he could not be enrolled, since he was not a nobleman or even a tradesman." After returning to Vladivostok, he went into commerce. In 1917 he left for Manchuria, where he headed the Harbin branch of the Sino-East Railway . He successfully participated in negotiations between business circles of Manchuria and the Bolsheviks from the Vladivostok Council of People's Deputies. At the same time, he became a professional intelligence officer.
In October 1922, he gained access to the Chinese embassy in Moscow, where as a result of a cunning operation he managed to make casts from the keys to the safe.
