Geography
Salsky district was located in the southeast of the region; it bordered on the Astrakhan and Stavropol provinces , occupied the space between the left bank of the Sal river and the right bank of the Manych river with an area of ββ18 386 square miles, or 1 915 208 dessiatins [2] .
History
The Salsky okrug Donskoy troops was formed in January 27, 1884 in the area of ββthe Zadonsky steppes from the former Kalmyk okrug .
By the beginning of the 20th century, the okrug occupied an area of ββ1,975,153 tithes of land with a population of 63,318 people, of which 34,993 were Cossacks , 28,129 were Kalmyks . There were 7 Kalmyk and 2 Cossack villages in the district. But already in 1912 there were 16 villages: the Grand Duchess , Platovskaya , Batlaevskaya , Denisovskaya , Ilovaiskaya , Kuteynikovskaya , Novo-Alekseevskaya , Vlasovskaya , Chunusovskaya , Erketinskaya , Potapovskaya , Atamanskaya , Belyaevskaya , Grabbevskaya , Burulskaya 3 , Oryol .
According to data from 1913, 30,178 people lived in the Salsky District, excluding workers in other districts and stud farms. There were 13 villages and 19 Kalmyk farms in the okrug. After the end of the Civil War in 1920, only 10,750 Kalmyks lived here, that is, the population decreased by three times.

On the territory of the former Salsky District of the Region, Don troops are now located on the territory of Dubovsky , Zavetinsky , Zimovnikovsky , Martynovsky , Oryol , Salsky , Proletarsky , Tselinsky districts

The population is 76,297 people, including Kalmyks - 28,063, Russians - 24,509, Ukrainians - 22,378, Germans - 778 [1] (1897).

Economics
The main occupation of the inhabitants was cattle breeding . In 1898, there were up to 100 thousand horses , 50 thousand cattle and up to 200 thousand sheep . At the beginning of the XX century, on average, winter and spring sowing per year reached 75 thousand quarters, the harvest - 350 thousand. Grapes were planted only by lovers; the villagers were engaged in truck farming (up to 700 dessiatines). In addition to cattle breeding, Kalmyks engaged in latrines, engaging in herdsmen and fisheries on the lower Don. At Lake Gruzskovsky , famous for its healing water, the Don Sanitary Treatment Station operated; mud treatment ( rheumatism , syphilis , scrofula and nervous diseases) lasted from May 15 to August 15 [2] .
