Biography
Born in Petersburg. He started his career since 1924 after graduating from school, in 1930 he entered the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University. Graduate of the Department of Economic Geography of the USSR (1935). Under the leadership of N.N. Baransky he graduated from the graduate school of the Research Institute of Geography (NIIIG) of Moscow State University, and in 1937 he defended his thesis.
In 1938 he began working at the Moscow Institute of Geodesy of MIIGAiK , aerial photography and cartography, at the Department of Map Composition and Editing, where he worked for a number of years under the guidance of G.N. Cherdantsev . Arkady Ivanovich conducted classes in economic geography, and also taught economic cartography in the course of mapping and editing. In 1939 he became an assistant professor in the department of design and mapping.
In 1954, A.I. Preobrazhensky was awarded the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences on the basis of his defense at MIIGAiK of the monograph "Russian Economic Maps and Atlases", after which he was awarded the title of professor.
From 1977 he worked at the Department of Physical Geography, from 1978 to 1981. headed the department. His research interests included the study of the creation of economic maps and atlases.
Scientific Activities
Simultaneously with the teaching activities of A.I. Preobrazhensky conducted extensive research, including on the history of national cartography. In 1953, his book "Russian economic maps and atlases" was published, which brought him fame and was used by him to defend the degree of doctor of technical sciences.
In 1953, he publishes his textbook entitled "Economic Cartography". Somewhat later, in 1962, Economic Cartography was published as a result of the joint work of A.I. Preobrazhensky and N.N. Baransky , which became a classic work.
From 1977 to 1982, A.I. Preobrazhensky headed the department of geography MIIGAiK. During these years, he developed for secondary school teachers another textbook entitled “Economic maps in the teaching of geography. A manual for teachers”, which was published in 1980.
A.I. Preobrazhensky systematically assisted cartographic production by participating in the creation of large cartographic works: "USSR Atlas of Agriculture", "USSR Economic Development and Atlas"
