Sports career
- Carier start
Michael Llodra started playing tennis at the age of six. At the age of 13-14, he trained with Georges Deneux, who also coached Guy Forge and Jacob Glasek . In 1997, he reached the final of the US Open in the men's doubles category (with Jean-René Linard ), and the next year he repeated this success at Wimbledon with Andy Ram . In 1998, he began performing in ITF Futures tournaments and in the first year he won two such tournaments in doubles (both with Linar). The following year, he won two "futures" in singles and doubles. In his first appearance at the adult Grand Slam tournament, he came out, also with Linar, in the second round of the doubles tournament of the French Open .
In 2000, he won his first ATP tournament in tandem with Italian Diego Nargiso , as well as three “ doubles ” in doubles. In November, for the first time he entered the first hundred tennis players in doubles according to the ATP Rating . The following year, he won two Challengers in singles and reached the semi-finals of the APR tournament in St. Petersburg ; in October he entered the top 100 singles in the world. In pairs, he won three Challengers and reached the quarterfinals of the French Open with the Swede Niklas Kulti .
- Peak career
In 2002, Llodra, who ranked 69th in the ranking of greenhouse tennis players, with another compatriot Fabrice Santoro reached the finals of the Australian Open ; on their way to the finals, they defeated one of the best couples in the world, the Indians Bhupati and Paes . After that, he was invited to the national team to participate in the Davis Cup . In the quarterfinals, he and Santoro lead the national team ahead of the match with the Czechs (Santoro after that still won the decisive fifth match in singles), and in the semifinal they are inferior to the American pair; Despite this, the national team wins the semifinals, but Santoro comes out with another partner for the final match with Russia . Llodra finishes the season among the 30 strongest tennis players in doubles.
In 2003, Llodra won only one tournament in pairs, but this tournament was the Australian Open, where Santoro was again his partner. In the finals, they defeated the first couple of the world, their last year's offenders Daniel Nestor and Mark Knowles . Subsequently, they reached the final four more times, including three times in the Masters category tournaments , and won the right to participate in the final ATP Tour tournament, Masters Cup . At the Masters Cup, they left the group with two victories and one defeat, from the brothers Bob and Mike Brian , and reached the finals, where they lost again to the Bryans.
In 2004, Llodra and Santoro won the Australian Open for the second time in a row, where this time they won the Brian final, and before that in the quarterfinal they won the second pair of the world, Bhupati and Maxim Mirny , and they also reached the final of the French Open, where in the quarterfinal pass Nestor and Knowles, and in the semifinals - Brian. After the finals at Roland Garros, Llodra is among the top ten tennis players in doubles. At the Olympics in Athens, Llodra and Santoro also perform together and reach the quarterfinals, where they lose to the Croatian pair Anchich - Lubichich . In the Davis Cup, Llodra with Nicolas Escudé helps the team reach the semifinals, where, together with Arno Clement, they lose to the Spaniards . For the second half of the year, Llodra and Santoro almost did not perform together, which did not allow them to get into the Masters Cup for the second year in a row. In singles, Llodra makes a quantum leap, reaching his first ATP tournament final already in early January, and in June winning his first ATP single title in Hertogenbosch . He also reaches the fourth round in the Open Championships of France and the USA, and in October he wins his first victory over a top ten tennis player, gaining the upper hand in St. Petersburg over Marat Safin . Llodra ends the year in 12th place in the ranking of paired players and in 41th place among singles.
In 2005, Llodra and Santoro reached two finals in a row at Masters tournaments and one of them, in Rome , won. After that, Llodra stands for the French team at the team World Cup , where he wins all three of his meetings in pairs (with Clement) and is inferior in both single games. Having won two tournaments in Santoro in France at the end of the season, they secure their place in the Masters Cup and win it by defeating the second pair of the world, Björkman and Mirny, in the group stage, and the Brian brothers in the semi-final, taking first place in the ranking.
- 2006-2010
After winning the Cup Masters Llodra broke up with Santoro. Clement became his new regular partner. Their first joint season brought them only one title, at the Masters tournament in Paris , and reached the quarter-finals of the US Open. In singles Llodra acts mainly in the “Challengers”. In June 2007, he wins the Wimbledon tournament with Clement, defeating the Brian brothers in the final. This was their second victory in the tournament of the three won during the season; twice they played in the finals and eventually won the right to participate in the Masters Cup, where, however, they lost all three meetings in the group.
Llodra begins 2008 with a second victory in the ATP tournament in Adelaide. They start the pair season with Clement with reaching the final of the Australian Open, the fourth in the career of Michael. In the third round, they defeated Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonich , and in the final they lost to Andy Ram and Jonathan Erlich from Israel . In February in Rotterdam, Llodra won his third and so far the largest single-player ATP tournament in his career, defeating the fourth racket of the world Nikolay Davydenko along the way, and in March with Clement the tournament in Las Vegas . In April, in a Davis Cup match with the US team, they defeated the Brian brothers, but the US team ultimately won the team victory. At the Beijing Olympics, Clement and Llodra reach the semifinals, where they concede to the Swedish pair Aspelin Johansson in a stubborn match (score in the third, decisive set 17-19), and in the match for bronze medals Bryans become in their way. Llodra performed at the Olympics and in singles, securing this right with victories in Adelaide and Rotterdam and reaching the fourth round at the French Open. In the first round, he defeated Radek Stepanek , who was 11 places ahead of him in the ranking, and in the second round he lost to the Russian Igor Andreev , who took the place five more positions higher. At the end of the season, she and Clement won another tournament in France (in Metz ; almost immediately after that, Llodra also won the tournament in Lyon with Andy Ram) and reached the semi-finals of the Masters tournament in Paris, but this was not enough to participate in the Masters Cup. Llodra became the only tennis player in the world who won more than one tournament this season in both singles and doubles this season.
In 2009, Clement and Llodra win one ATR tournament and in another they reach the final. In total, Llodra plays with nine different partners during the season, but does not achieve more success with anyone, ending the year in 49th place in the ranking, the lowest since 2002 . In singles, he twice plays in the finals, on the way to the first of which, in Marseille , defeats the eighth racket of the world of Gilles Simon . Reaching the final at the end of the year in Lyon allows him to end the season in the top 100 single players. 2010, Llodra began in tandem with Andy Ram, but in the first three tournaments they were able to win only one match. As a result, most of the year Llodra performed with Julien Benneto , with whom he twice visited the finals and won one title. He was more successful in singles, where he won two tournaments, defeated three rivals from the top ten, including defeating recent US Open finalist Novak Djokovic in the autumn tournament in Paris, and in a year went from 67 to 23 places . Another important success was reaching the Davis Cup finals with the French national team, where in the match with the Serbian team Llodra initially won a doubles match, where Arno Clement was his partner, but lost to Victor Troitsky in the decisive single game, giving the Serbs a 3-point victory: 2. Prior to this defeat, he won six consecutive wins in this Davis Cup draw in matches against German , Spanish , Argentine and Serbian teams.
- The final period of a career
In 2011, Nenad Zimonich, the former first doubles of the world in doubles, became a partner of Llodra. Together they won four ATP 1000 and ATP 500 tournaments in a year, and reached the semi-finals at the French Open and Wimbledon. As a result, by the end of November, Llodra made his way to third place in the ranking of players in doubles and played in the final tournament of the year, where he and Zimonich, however, did not leave the group. In singles, he also rose to the highest position in his career (21st place in the ranking) after reaching the quarter-finals of the Masters tournament in Madrid , and a little later he reached the fourth round at Wimbledon.
In 2012, Llodra's achievements were modest enough, and the most important of them was reaching the final of the London Olympics in a pair with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga . In addition, Llodra won the third tournament of his career in Rotterdam with Zimonich, and reached the finals in Marseille in singles. The next year, Llodra paired with Nicolas Mayu for the second time in his career reached the finals of the French Open, and in tournaments of a lower rank he won the next two titles in doubles. In singles, he managed to win three victories over rivals from the top ten in the first rounds of the APR tournaments - the ninth racket of the world Janko Tipsarevich and the eighth racket of the world Tsonga at the beginning of the season and the tenth racket of the world Richard Gaske at the end - but he only got once to the semi-finals of the APR tournament, ending the year in a single rating outside the first hundred.
Before the start of the 2014 season , Llodra announced his intention to end his playing career after this season [2] . Nevertheless, this year did not become a passing one in Michael's career. At the Australian Open, he and Nicolas Mayu, being sown under 13th number, beat the third and fifth seeded pairs and reached the semifinals, losing to future winners Lukash Kubot and Robert Lindstedt there . Immediately after this, Llodra and Mayu in Rotterdam reached their third joint finals in the ATP tournaments and won the first joint title - the 26th in a double career of Llodra. Later, they also reached the semi-finals at Miami Masters and at Wimbledon, both times losing at this stage to the first pair of the world - the Brian brothers. Paired with Benneto, Llodra made a key contribution to the victory of the French national team in the Davis Cup quarterfinal match: with a score of 0: 2 in games in favor of the German national team, Llodra and Benneto defeated the German pair Andre Begeman - Tobias Kamke , which made a break in the course of the match, which ended with a total score of 3: 2 in favor of the French [3] . In singles, Michael’s best result was reaching the fourth round in Monte Carlo after defeating the 21st racket of the world, Jerzy Janovich .
At the end of the season, Llodra, having officially completed his solo career, decided to continue playing in pairs [4] , but the elbow operation performed in the offseason was unsuccessful and never returned to the court in the new season. In November 2015, it was officially announced that Llodra had completed his playing career and began coaching - he was invited to help prepare the Belgian national team for the Davis Cup final against the British team [5] .
