A pupil of the Lisbon Sporting, he did not play for the main team of this club, at one time he played on a loan for Lorignanense, a club of one of the Portuguese lower leagues, which de facto served as the Sporting farm club.
In June 1997, it was acquired by London 's Arsenal for £ 1.75 million. In July 2000, he went on loan to Fulham , who played in England’s second strongest division , for one season. The 2000/01 season was very successful for Luis: he scored 21 goals, 18 of them in the championship, and his club, led by Jean Teagan , won the tournament and entered the Premier League. In June 2001, he was bought by Fulham for 1.7 million pounds. He spent another five and a half seasons in this club, which became during his appearances there a middle man of the Premier League, was a player in the main squad, and at one time was a captain.
