Kazatomprom has the status of the national operator of the Republic of Kazakhstan for the export and import of uranium and its compounds, nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants, special equipment and technologies. This status provides the company with certain privileges, including obtaining subsurface use rights through direct negotiations with the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and, accordingly, priority access to high-quality natural uranium deposits in the Republic of Kazakhstan, suitable for mining using underground borehole leaching (PSV).
Kazatomprom produces uranium only in the Republic of Kazakhstan and has the industry’s largest uranium reserve base of 295 thousand tons.
All of the company's uranium deposits are suitable for cost-effective and least environmentally harmful extraction using the PSV method, which, combined with the long life of the mining assets, allows Kazatomprom to remain among the world's leading producers with the lowest cost of uranium mining.
Lately [ when? ] Kazatomprom revised its traditional strategy of increasing production and sales volumes in favor of market orientation, shifting the emphasis from volumes to realizable value.

Activities of NAC KAZATOMPROM JSC
Geological exploration
Kazakhstan is the second country in the world in terms of uranium reserves and resources after Australia and number one in uranium mining.
The first industrial deposit in the republic (Kordayskoye) was explored in 1951. The largest discoveries were made later. At the end of the 60s, the uranium province was discovered in the Shu-Sarysuy and Ili depressions in Southern Kazakhstan, which became the largest uranium ore reserve in the world.
Thanks to these discoveries, Kazakhstan has become a world leader in proven uranium reserves suitable for mining by underground leaching.
Uranium deposits discovered on the territory of Kazakhstan are different in terms of formation and practical value. By the generality of geological positions, genetic characteristics, and territorial isolation, the Kazakhstan deposits can be considered as part of six uranium ore provinces: Shu-Sarysuyskaya, Syrdarya, North Kazakhstan, Caspian, Balkhash, Iliysk.
Currently, out of 56 explored deposits with balance reserves of uranium, 14 are being developed, and the remaining 42 are in reserve.
Kazakhstan has 67% of the world's proven uranium reserves, suitable for mining by the method of underground borehole leaching (PSV).
Consequently, the Company owns a unique raw material base, which includes the world's largest explored and estimated reserves of uranium. 100% of the reserves can be extracted using the PSV method.
The geological support of all Kazatomprom activities and the technological drilling of mining and preparatory work at the uranium mining enterprises of the Company are carried out by the exploration enterprise Volkovgeologiya JSC, which is the assignee of the Volkov exploration expedition that discovered the Kordaysky deposit.
Natural uranium mining
Kazatomprom, together with subsidiaries, affiliates and joint organizations, is developing 26 sites in the Republic of Kazakhstan, combined into 13 mining assets
Natural uranium mining regions
The method of uranium mining by the method of downhole leaching (PSV) was first used in the 1960s and accounted for 50% of the global uranium production in 2017.
The PSV method, in comparison with traditional methods, provides a lower cost of production, has a less negative impact on the environment and provides high performance in the field of production safety and labor protection.
Favorable geological conditions of the Republic of Kazakhstan, suitable for PSV mining, provide Kazatomprom with a unique competitive advantage.
100% of uranium mining Kazatomprom is carried out by the PSV method.
• Kazatomprom is producing uranium in 8 of the 10 largest mines using the PSV method.
• Kazatomprom is the undisputed leader in the production of uranium by the PSV method with a capacity of 12.1 thousand tons (~ 40% of global uranium production in 2017), significantly surpassing its main competitors.
Nuclear Fuel Cycle (NFC) Products
NAC Kazatomprom JSC expanded its activities in the pre-reactor nuclear fuel cycle chain, including enrichment, production of UO2 / fuel pellet powders, and plans to start production of fuel assemblies in the near future.
In October 2013, NAC Kazatomprom JSC through the Kazakh-Russian joint venture JSC TsOU became a shareholder of JSC Ural Electrochemical Plant, the largest uranium enrichment enterprise. This cooperation in the peaceful uses of atomic energy allowed the company to gain access to uranium enrichment services. At the same time, in order to create conversion production, NAC Kazatomprom JSC is working on the transfer of innovative technologies to Kazakhstan.
A subsidiary of JSC NAC Kazatomprom JSC Ulba Metallurgical Plant provides services for the conversion and production of fuel pellets.
For almost 40 years, a subsidiary of NAC Kazatomprom JSC, Ulba Metallurgical Plant JSC, has been providing services for the conversion and production of uranium dioxide fuel pellets for light water reactors.
NAC Kazatomprom JSC, together with the China General Nuclear Energy Corporation CGNPC, implements on the basis of Ulba Metallurgical Plant JSC a project for the construction of a plant for the production of fuel assemblies for use at nuclear power plants of China as nuclear fuel. The start of production of fuel assemblies is expected at the end of 2020.
Rare metals
Rare metals (RM) and their compounds have a unique set of physicochemical properties and are widely used in instrumentation, mechanical engineering, metallurgy, nuclear energy and medicine.
Tantalum - niobium and beryllium production are deployed on the basis of the Ulba Metallurgical Plant and are one of the largest in the world.
History
On July 14, 1997, by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the National Atomic Company Kazatomprom was established. The holding included the exploration company Volkovgeologiya , three ore departments (Stepnoye, Tsentralnoye, Sixth) and the Ulba Metallurgical Plant .
In 2003, the Government of Kazakhstan, Kazatomprom was entrusted with the task of eliminating the crisis from the Mangystau Nuclear Energy Plant , a large diversified energy enterprise, which is the only source of energy supply in the Mangistau region [4] .
Since 2009, Kazakhstan has been the largest uranium mining state and world leader in the production of natural uranium. Kazakhstan uranium concentrate provides more than 40% of the needs of peaceful nuclear energy and is supplied to almost all countries of the world where nuclear power plants are operated.
In 2015, the company launched the Transformation Program, the task of which is to increase the efficiency of the company.
