Kerber, Angelica

Angelica is one of two daughters in the Polish family of Beata and Slavomir Kerberov, who also has German roots . Her sister's name is Jessica.

Started playing tennis at the age of three. In parallel, she seriously engaged in swimming , showed good results in local competitions, but, in the end, focused on tennis. Parents contributed to the daughter’s enthusiasm, and mom is still her manager.

Early years

At 13, Kerber won the Polish championship among fourteen-year-olds, a couple of years later she first won the German championship among eighteen-year-olds, and a year later she defended her title. The international junior career was less successful: in the older age group, she was able to achieve only a place among the fifty strongest tennis players in the world, and also once in the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam singles and doubles (both times in Australia ). The Federation already in 2003 gave Kerber a special invitation to qualify for the Berlin tournament of the 1st category, where she outplayed the Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli , who was then the 61st racket of the world, in her debut match in the professional round. At the next tournament (on the 25-thousandth in Liechtenstein ) Kerber first qualified. In October, she played for the first time in the quarter-finals - Severin Beltram lost at the 25-thousander in Port . In February 2004, she first reached the finals at tournaments of this level. Beating Maret Ani and Anastasia Ekimova , Kerber in the three-set match lost the title to Martha Domakhovskaya, 25-thousander in Warsaw . In November, she took her first adult title, winning the competition in Opole . In May 2005, she reached the final in the Spanish Monson . The next success came in February of the following year - the title in the Canadian Saguenay .

2006-08

After a short pause in performances in the spring and summer of 2006, Kerber first started in two tournaments in a row and reached the semi-finals, and on different surfaces. In the qualification of the tournament, the WTA lost to Jeanette Gusarova , but took one of her sets “dry” from her. Then two consecutive titles were taken on 25 thousandths - in Jersey and Glasgow . At the end of October, a debut at the core of the WTA took place: having quit qualifying and passing along Virginie Razzano and Romina Oprandi , Kerber lost in the second round in Hasselt, Anne Ivanovich - 3: 6, 7: 6 (3), 3: 6. By the end of the year, she reached the semifinals in Opole and took the title in Prerov . Before the last tournament of the year - in Dubai - for the first time entered the Top200.

At the beginning of 2007, Kerber rarely lost in the stages to the quarter-finals, noting in the finals in Palm Desert , Sagenaeum , Las Palmas and Tenerife . Meetings with more experienced rivals most often ended in defeats - the German was inferior to Emmanuel Galliardi , Selim Sfar and Stephanie Cohen-Aloro . Before Roland Garros, she was twice mentioned in the finals of ITF tournaments - in Antalya and in Monson. At Roland Garros, she first hit the base of the Grand Slam tournament, as the 93rd racket of the world. The clay season ended at 75 thousandth in Prerov, where Kerber took her next title. Wimbledon preparations brought in two third rounds at WTA tournaments. At tournaments in Birmingham and Hertogenbosch, Kerber marked a series of victories over the Top70 players. In the first four tournaments of 2008, Kerber won one match, including the Australian Open (the first victory in the main grid of the Grand Slam tournaments was won by Maret Ani - 0: 6, 6: 3, 6: 2). In the spring, she reached the third round in Indian Wells (the 41st racket of the world Olga Govortsova was beaten) and the second round in Miami (the 66th racket of the world Akgul Amanmuradova was beaten). The spring clay season brought 5 defeats in 5 matches. Kerber left the singles rating. For the second year in a row, Olga Puchkova was beaten in Birmingham, and won three matches in Hertogenbosch . An attempt in January 2009 to return to the WTA level was unproductive - with the exception of three victories in Sydney, all tournaments ended in the first match. At the US Open for the first time in three Grand Slam tournaments, Kerber went to the base, where she reached the second round. In the ranking returned to the first hundred.

At Wimbledon, she went into the third round, beating the 13th seeded Shahar Peer from Israel . Hard season began in Copenhagen . Kerber reached the quarterfinals, where she lost to Li Na . Most of the summer-autumn hard series was carried out extremely poorly, but in Beijing, Kerber reached the third round, passing Agnieszka Radwanska and Alexander Dulger . At the end of the season, Kerber dominated the semifinals in Luxembourg , following Daniel Gantukhov . Completed the year 46th.

2011

At the competitions in Hobart, she reached the quarter finals, losing to Bethany Mattek-Sands . In the next five tournaments, inferior in the first rounds. Reached the finals of the 100 thousandth in Nassau . where she lost to Anastasia Ekimova , having beaten Tsvetana Pironkova and Rebecca Marino on the road. In August, she performed well at the tournament in Grapevine , losing to Aravan Rezai in the final.

2012

In Auckland and Hobart, she reached two semi-finals, defeating Julia Gerges and Sabina Lisicki . At the Australian Open, Kerber reached the third round, where she lost to Maria Sharapova . A couple of weeks later, Kerber took revenge on the Russians, winning her first WTA title in Paris .

In Indian Wells, she reached the semi-finals, where she lost to Azarenka ^[5] , having beaten the 8th racket of the world Li Na on the way . At a competition in Copenhagen, she brought her unbeaten run in tournaments in the hall to 11 matches, breaking the 14-match streak without losing to Carolina Wozniacki in the home tournament. Also on the way to the title, Elena Yankovich and Mona Bartel were beaten.

On the ground, she first reached the third round in Stuttgart and Madrid (having beaten Wozniacki a second time), and then went to the semi-finals of the tournament in Rome , beating Petra Kvitova and the quarter-finals at Roland Garros . On the grass, she first reached the finals of a major tournament in Eastbourne , where, not having realized several matchballs, she lost the title to Tamira Pashek ; then she reached the Wimbledon semifinal, beating Kim Claysters and Sabina Lisicki . A segment of the season ended in the fourth round of the US Open , where she lost to Italian Sarah Errani . She reached the semi-finals in Tokyo and the quarter-finals in Beijing. 2013-14

At the start of the 2013 season, after several quarter-finals at warm-up tournaments, she entered the fourth round at the Australian Open , losing to Ekaterina Makarova . The subsequent series of tournaments in Europe did not bring the matches won due to minor back problems ^[6] ; in March-April it reached the semi-finals at the major prize in Indian Wells and the finals at the small tournament in Monterrey . In the subsequent unpaved stretch, she first helped her team return to the elite group of the Federation Cup , later played in the semifinals in Stuttgart and the quarter finals in Madrid. At the end of May I took a break due to problems with the abdominal muscles. ^[7] At Roland Garros, Kerber reached the fourth round, losing to Svetlana Kuznetsova . Over the next few months, I lost a lot in the early stages, often losing even to those matches where in the course of time I got a solid advantage over the account.

In the fall, she first reached the fourth round at the US Open , and a few weeks later the pause reached the final at a major competition in Tokyo, where she beat Agnieszka Radwanska and lost to Petra Kvitova in the final. The rest of the year brought the quarter-finals at a major tournament in Beijing and the title in prize in Linz , which allowed Kerber to qualify for the second year in a row at the Final Tournament , where she did not leave the group again, but won her first match in such a competition.

In 2014, she successfully held the Australian series, reaching the final in Sydney , the quarterfinals in Brisbane and the fourth round at the Australian Open . In February, early lesions were more likely to follow; but Kerber reached the final in Dubai , where she lost to Simone Halep . The spring season brought a long decline, marked only by reaching the quarter-finals in Miami and the fourth round at Roland Garros , in contrast to which Kerber completed the tournaments five times in the first match.

At grass tournaments, she reached the final in Eastbourne (having beaten Carolina Wozniacki , but lost to Madison Keyes ), and reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon (having defeated Maria Sharapova lost to Eugenie Bouchard ). 2015

Beginning the 2015 season with the quarter finals and semifinals in Brisbane and Sydney , Kerber then won only one match in four tournaments and by March was already engaged under the guidance of another coach - returning to Torben Balti . ^[8] The remainder of the hard series went without much success, and the start of the clay season brought a sharp spike - Kerber was marked by two titles at once in the April tournaments, and at the competitions in Charleston she managed to interrupt her nine-match series from the defeats in the finals of the tournaments on the open courts, beating Madison Keyes . The successes in medium-sized tournaments continued even further, but in the competitions of the senior premiere series and Grand Slam tournaments, Kerber first went beyond the third round only in the fall - on a bunch of competitions in Wuhan and Beijing ; which ultimately affected the schedule at the end of the season, where the German, even having played four weeks in a row after the US Open , was not classified to the Final Prize until the last. Kerber still selected in Singapore, but one victory in the group stage was not enough to reach the semifinals.

2016

The start of a new season for Kerber was the best of his career. First, she reached the final of the tournament in Brisbane, in which she lost to Victoria Azarenka. At the Australian Open, having left in a kick-off match with Japanese Misaki Doi from a matchball, Kerber went on the tournament bracket, including taking revenge from Azarenka. For the first time in her career, she reached the final of the Grand Slam tournament, where on January 30 she won a sensational victory over the 6-time and current Australian Open champion, the first racket of the world Serena Williams in three sets 6: 4, 3: 6, 6: 4. Kerber's victory was the first in the 21st century in the Grand Slam tournaments for the representative of Germany and raised her to second place in the WTA ranking.

After this victory, Kerber experienced a slight decline in results. At the tournament in Doha (Premier 5), where it was seeded under the 1st number, in the second round in two games lost to Chinese tennis player Zheng Saysai 5: 7, 1: 6. At the Premier Mandatory tournament in the American Indian Wells, Kerber also left the competition after the second round, losing in two sets to Czech Denise Allertova 5: 7, 5: 7. At the next super tournament in Miami, Kerber reached the semifinals, where in two games she lost to future winner Victoria Azarenka 2: 6, 5: 7. In Charleston, due to a viral infection, Kerber in the 1/2 final match against the American Sloan Stevens starred with a score of 1: 6, 0: 3. At the Premier series tournament in Stuttgart in the final on April 24, Kerber outplayed compatriot Laura Siegemund 6: 4, 6: 0. For her, this title was the ninth in her career and second in the current season.

At the start of the French Open, Kerber lost in three sets to Kiki Bertens from the Netherlands 2: 6, 6: 3, 3: 6. At Wimbledon 2016, she reached the semifinals, where she defeated five-time champion Venus Williams 6: 4, 6: 4 and for the first time in her career reached the final of the tournament. For the title, as in Melbourne, she played with the first racket of the world - Serena Williams, where she lost in two sets 5: 7, 3: 6. At the end of the tournament, Kerber returned to second place in the WTA ranking.

Then she reached the semifinals in Montreal. In the final of the Olympic Games in Rio, she lost to Puerto Rican Monica Puig .

Winning a tournament in Cincinnati guaranteed Kerber first place in the ranking. The German, who was not in the best physical form, reached the finals, where she lost to Czech Karolina Plishkova. Thus, American Serena Williams was able to repeat the Steffi Graf record for continuous leadership in the women's ranking - 186 consecutive weeks.
