Etne Toebfota

Etne Toebfota ( dr. Eithne T (h) oebfota, Táebfada , there are other spellings) [1] - the name and nickname of several characters in Irish history and mythology.

1) Etne ( dr. Irl. Eithne Táebfada ) - wife of Conn Hundred Battles . In Irish legends, her father was called Brislin Brinn, ruler of Norway.

2) Etne ( Dr. Irith Eithne Táebfada , in some sources also Dr. Irith Eithne Ollamda - Etne Uchena) was Cormack's wife. In the saga “ Songs of the House of Buchet ” [2] it is said that Etne was the daughter of King Leinster Katayr More (Great). However, this statement was contrary to the traditional pattern of Irish history, according to which Cathyr the Great was a contemporary of Conn's Hundred Battles, Cormack's grandfather. Therefore, in other texts, she is referred to as the daughter of King Leinster Dunlang, the son of Enna Niad.

Etne was brought up in the house of Buchet, the owner of countless herds of cows. The Etne brothers ravaged Buchet, constantly visiting and feasting with him. Buhet became impoverished and decided to flee south to Kennanas (Kells). Here Etne, who milked the cows, was met by the future King Cormac. Upon learning that Etne was a royal daughter, Cormac decided to marry her and asked her to marry her adoptive father, Buchet, but he did not give her up; Cormac nevertheless spent the night with her, and she gave birth to Kairpre Lifehire. Over time, Etne became Cormac's wife and queen. This is described in the saga " Songs of the House of Buhet " [3] . According to T.F. O'Rahilli, the saga reflects the myth of the hero getting the bride from a divine shepherd. Etne gave birth to Cormac, the daughters of Ailbe, Greine (the wife of Finn Mack Kumal ), the sons of Karpre Lifhehair , Kellah Karpre.

When Cormac decided to marry Kiarneith from Alba ( Scotland ), Etne, his legal wife, tried to plague the girl with hard work (forced to grind grain by hand), but the craftsman from Alba created a mill for Cormac and thereby freed Kiarnaite from slavery of Etne, the wife of Cormac [ 4] .

3) Etne ( dr. Irl. Ethne Táebfoda ) - mother of St. Columbus (Colum Kille) . The oldest source - “The Life of St. Columbus” by Adomann calls her the daughter of Dimma, son of Nae. In later genealogies, she is also a descendant of Katyr the Great and comes from the Leinster royal family; her mother is called Erk, daughter of Loarn , king of Alba [5] . It was said that Columbus was so protective of his chastity that he never looked at his mother [6] .
