BPM (music)

Sign for 120 BPM, measured in quarters

BPM ( bpm , beats per minute [1] , beats per minute ) in music - an indicator that determines the speed of performance or playback of a composition. BPM is the number of beats per minute, for example, 120 BPM means that 120 beats are played per minute (hence 2 beats per second), or 120 metronome beats per minute.

If it is not specified separately, then a share is usually understood as a quarter note, but other durations can be used. In musical notation, there is a generally accepted way of indicating the speed of performance using BPM. In this case, the number of fractions per minute is written to the right of the equal sign, and the dimension of the fraction is written to the left. This method can be used both alongside and instead of the traditional designation of tempo .

Most of the works are performed, recorded and played in the range from 30 to 240 BPM, more precise boundaries depend on the genre. However, it should be noted that the speed of the work also depends on the duration of the notes; thus, a whole note with a speed of 120 BPM sounds faster than the 32nd note with a speed of 2 BPM; the reverse is also true - a melody written in whole notes at a speed of 120 BPM sounds slower than a melody written in 32 at a speed of 4 BPM. Thus, the BPM indicator is relative and it makes sense to compare the speed of songs only in close genres with a similar agreement on the use of note durations.
