Cathedral History
In 1613, King James I created the new county of Londonderry . It was also decided to build a new city. First, it was decided to build a cathedral, and the Irish community of London sent a gilded silver bowl and a tray for the future cathedral. The bowl is still used in the cathedral.
In 1614, a bell was sent to the cathedral.
Construction began in 1628 . The cathedral was built from stone quarried in local quarries . The cathedral is designed in the Gothic style .
The cathedral was opened for parishioners in 1633 and consecrated in honor of St. Columbus . It was the first cathedral in the British Isles built after the Reformation .
The appearance of the building remained unchanged until 1776 , when the tower was superstructured at 6.5 m , and a stone spire was built, which in total gave the tower a height of 67.5 m. However, after 20 years the superstructure began to decay and it was removed, and the tower was rebuilt in 1802 . After 20 years, a spire was added. In 1825, the southern portico was removed, and in 1827 the eastern tower was rebuilt. In 1861 - 1862, a lot of work was done to update the interior of the cathedral. In 1887, the altar was finalized. In 1910, the house of the chapel was built.
Subsequently, the cathedral, basically, retained its appearance, but suffered from terrorist bombs. Significant losses suffered ancient stained glass . [one]
