Childhood and Youth
Fedor Semenovich Churkin was born on July 24, 1932 in the village of Berezhki, Maksatikhinsky district of the Moscow region (now the Tver region ), becoming the fourth child in the family.
Father - Semyon Ivanovich Churkin ( 1902 - 1980 ), since 1937 he worked as director of the Maksatikhinsky timber industry enterprise, went through the entire Great Patriotic War and was awarded three orders and ten medals, and in the 1960s he was awarded the Order of Honor and the Order of Labor Red Banner. "
Mother - Daria Gerasimovna Churkina, nee Orlova ( 1904 - 1985 ), was engaged in housekeeping and raising children.
From school, Fedor drew very well and was fond of photography . And when in 1951 he completed a two-year distance learning course at the N.K. Krupskaya All-Union House of Folk Arts in Moscow (department of drawing and painting), he was predicted to be the future of a great artist . At the end of the school, Fyodor Semyonovich was going to enter the Academy of Arts in Leningrad , but his parents could not provide him with financial support, since his two older brothers Ivan and Alexei and sister Valentina were already studying at universities
Studying at VVMU named after M.V. Frunze
In 1951, Fyodor Semenovich entered the VVMU named after. MV Frunze, now the St. Petersburg Naval Institute , at the Hydrographic Department, where there was full state support. He studied well, continued to draw a lot. Many drawings, sketches and portraits have been preserved, although most of his works he generously gave away.
A striking episode of school times was the participation in the funeral of I.V. Stalin in Moscow , where cadets of VVMU im. MV Frunze provided a cordon. At the funeral of Stalin, because of the huge number of people who wanted to say goodbye to the leader, a stampede arose as a result of which there were victims. According to the journalist V. Golovanov, “the exact number of those killed is unknown or classified” [1] .
In 1954, the hydrographic faculty of VVMU im. MV Frunze was transformed into a separate Higher Naval Hydrographic School and relocated with the cadets to the city of Pushkin . This school was in 1955 and graduated from Fedor Semenovich.
Works on the Black Sea
Since 1955, Fedor Churkin served in a separate hydrographic unit of the Black Sea Fleet [2] .
1956 - participated in hydrographic work in the northwestern part of the Black Sea ( topographic survey , coastal survey, combat trawling ), engaged in triangulation from Ochakov to Odessa .
1957 - 1959 - participated in hydrographic work in the Taganrog Bay area and in the area of the Danube River (triangulation, decryption and georeferencing, updating sea plans in Taganrog , Zhdanov , Rostov Sea Canal ).
Since 1959, he served as senior officer of the topographic party.
1960 - participated in hydrographic work in the area of the Utlyuk estuary , Genichesk settlement (triangulation, decoding and aerial photography binding, mensulic survey of Genichesk settlement).
1961 - participated in hydrographic work in the area of Temryuk . Aerial photography and coastal survey in the Utliuk estuary (triangulation, decoding and aerial mapping from Aitodor metro station to Kommunary metro station).
1962 - hydrographic work in the area of the Danube River (triangulation, decoding and aerial photography binding).
1963 - participated in hydrographic work in the area of the Dardanelles and Bosphorus straits , in the area of metro Tarkhankut and on the Bakalsky Bank (measured).
1964 - participated in hydrographic work in the area of Primorsko-Akhtarsk ( Sea of Azov ), in the area of Lake. Donuzlav (triangulation, decoding and aerial photographs binding, measurement).
From 1961 to 1964 - commander of the geodetic party.
He was engaged in topography and surveying along the Caucasian coast, in the Crimea and near Odessa . Many coastal maps of the 60s were made by him [3] .
Works on the coast of Albania
Fyodor Semyonovich during his service in the Black Sea Fleet in 1957 - 1958 had the opportunity to participate in hydrographic work in Albania in the south-eastern part of the Adriatic Sea . It was the first foreign hydrographic expedition in the post-war period for Soviet sailors [4] . In fact, “from scratch” maps of the coast and sea maps of coastal waters were created for then friendly Albania [4] .
The main works at this time for Churkin were triangulation of IV class. from Vlore to Durress , decryption and aerial photographing, including about. Sazan , the planned and high-altitude justification for topographic surveys in the village of Vlore, in b. Pasha Liman , oceanographic work in b. Vlora, radar survey.
During work in Albania, Fyodor Semyonovich saved a drowning man [4] , who turned out to be Bido Ibrahini , studying the marine profession alongside Soviet specialists and later becoming a famous journalist and writer in Albania. After this incident, Bido and Fedor made a close friendship.
Bido Ibrahini wrote several books, one of which, entitled "Sevastopol Waltz", dedicated to F. S. Churkin. On the title page, it contains dedication verses and a portrait of Fyodor Semenovich. The book is published in Albanian, Italian and Russian [5] .
Atomic Site Service
From 1964 to 1967, Fedor Semyonovich served as a test engineer at the Soviet nuclear test site on Novaya Zemlya . The landfill control center was located in Belushi Guba (military unit 77510). During the service of Fedor Semenovich, the tests were mainly carried out at the site of the Matochkin Shar training ground [6] .
Service in Leningrad
Having received his second education at the Naval Academy at the Faculty of Radio Electronics in 1967 - 1970 , Fedor Semyonovich Churkin began teaching at VVMU named after M.V. Frunze at the Department of Technical Means of Navigation and Military Hydrography.
For all his creative essence, Fedor Semenovich was an excellent mathematician and a good scientist [4] .
Churkin prepared training courses and teaching aids, such as “Aligning geodetic networks in a parametric way” ( 1977 ) and “Photographic methods in hydrographic surveys” ( 1980 ).
In the preface to the fundamental work of ND Kolomiychuk “Hydrography” (1st edition, 1975), which is still the reference book of any hydrograph, the author expressed his gratitude to Fedor Semenovich for the exceptional attention and valuable comments in the discussion of the manuscript.
“He was a very good teacher, cadets respected, loved and appreciated him, probably as much as none of his colleagues, who even envied him for good.” - L. G. Kolotilo [4]
Thesis defense
He defended his dissertation in 1982 under pressure and at the insistence of his colleagues in the department of military hydrography, considering this procedure to be time-consuming from his favorite work. The dissertation was prepared on issues of sea optics and underwater visibility. In defense of the dissertation, the Scientific Council noted that the work could be immediately presented as a doctoral [4] .
In 1985, he was awarded the academic title of Associate Professor.

Artistic
Fyodor Churkin was a creative person - he sang well, played the guitar, composed poetry, but most importantly, he possessed artistic talent. In his poem "Hydrographs at Sea" there are such lines:
And a firm hand, not knowing fatigue,
Today at night is a survey bot.
The mystery of the ages has gone into legend
A region of unfamiliar waters.
So that ships in familiar ways
They went to guard their native sea space,
Depth hydrographs indicated
And a dispute was resolved from the secret sea.
It is impossible, and even unlawful, to separate the professional abilities of researcher F. S. Churkin from his talent as an artist. He painted in oil, tempera, gouache. He left a lot of watercolors, but most of all drawings in pencil, charcoal, pastel. A ballpoint pen and a small notebook were constant companions in his travels. This helped to develop the features of his masterly technique of depicting nature, especially trees, using such simple means as a simple pen with a pen or a ball. His impressions and thoughts of the researcher were reflected in his paintings, paintings and drawings.
Wherever he served, his works were exhibited at art exhibitions:
- Sevastopol 1960, 1961
- New Earth 1965
- Leningrad 1968, 1969
- Severomorsk 1972
In the two-volume edition edited by Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences V. N. Mikhailov, “Nuclear Tests in the Arctic,” dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the testing ground in Novaya Zemlya, there are such lines written by one of the participants in the tests:
“The recognized artist, singer of the Novaya Zemlya nature, was Senior Lieutenant F. Churkin. He painted in the style of Rockwell Kent or Roerich . F. Churkin gave my wife 4 watercolors of landscapes of the New Earth. Whoever saw them, immediately the question: “Roerich, Kent?”. While in Severomorsk in the mid-70s, I saw an ad in the newspaper that a personal exhibition of paintings by captain 2nd rank F. Churkin was opened in the Officers House, I am very sorry that I could not visit her ” [7] .
- Captain of the 3rd rank of the reserve, veteran of the special risk units Yu.S. Katranov
Serving in the New Earth, he volunteered as an artist at the House of Officers. It was with great pleasure that he prepared sketches for costumes and scenery for amateur theatrical productions. Fyodor Semyonovich took an active part in the design of the exposition dedicated to one of the anniversaries of the remarkable original northern artist and traveler Tyko Vylka , a native of those places. And in the museum at the House of Officers the model of the New Earth, made by his hands, is still kept.
