After the military coup in 1969, Sudanese President Jafar Nimeyri abolished all other political parties. After a political transition in 1985, Turabi reorganized the former party into the National Islamic Front (NIF), which secured the adoption of an Islamic constitution. Ultimately, the NIF supported another military coup in 1989, which led to the power of Omar al-Bashir, who publicly supported the NIF’s Islamist program. The party structure consists at the national level of the General Conference, the Shura Council and the Council of Leaders, as well as the executive branch.

After the split of the National Islamic Front (NIF), the party was divided into two parts. The Islamic movement led by its secretary Hassan al-Turabi and the military, led by Omar al-Bashir, in 1989 organized a military coup against the elected president Sadyk al-Mahdi . Omar al-Bashir, who also became chairman of the party seized power in the country, began the institutionalization of Sharia law at the national level [1] .

The party was created in 1998 by key political figures of the National Islamic Front (NIF), as well as other politicians. The Board of the NK is the longest. The political movement arose as a result of the activity of the Muslim Brotherhood of Islamist student groups that survived the revolutionary violence of Salafists and jihadists.

On March 1, 2019, Omar al-Bashir, who led the party for several decades, resigned as party chairman after ongoing mass protests . Prior to the next congress, his deputy, Ahmed Harun, was appointed [2] . However, on April 11, Harun was arrested during a military coup in the country [3] .
