Biography

Paul Grenier was born in Saarlouis on January 29, 1768. December 21, 1784 Grenier joined the privates in the 96th Line Regiment.

The revolution in France promptly lifted Grenier up: in the battle of Valmy he was already captain , for the distinction under Gemappe he was appointed adjutant general and on April 24, 1794, Grenier was promoted to division general. In 1795, he distinguished himself under the command of Jourdan on the Rhine under Fleurus ; in 1796 - in the battle of Lahn; and in 1797, when Ghosh ruled over this army, Grenier under Neuwied acted against the Austrians so successfully that he received written thanks from the Directory in the most flattering terms.

In 1799, Grenier covered the retreat of Scherer in Italy , then was sent by General Moreau to Grenoble to gather his troops; but managed to cross back through the Alps after the battle of Novi ; November 10, he took the fortified Austrian camp at Dalonuo, and in May 1800 he defended the Tend Gorge. Shortly thereafter, Moreau called him into the Rhine Army and entrusted him with command over the two divisions of the left wing, with which Grenier moved through Gunzburg to Ingolstadt ; later he participated in the battles of Hochstedt , Hohenlinden and in the following battles, and at the conclusion of the Luneville Peace he was appointed inspector general of all infantry [1] .

In 1807, Napoleon made him Count, Knight of the Legion of Honor (August 14, 1809) and Governor of Mantua.

In the campaign of 1809 against Austria, Grenier distinguished himself when crossing the Piave and Taglimento rivers and took Fort Malborghetto with an attack, he fought at Sachile and Caldiero. Then he was wounded in the battle of Wagram and soon after recovery he was sent to Naples , where King Joachim made him the head of his General Staff.

At the end of 1812, Grenier went to Prussia to meet the wreckage of the Great Army, defeated in Russia, and contributed much to the restoration of the fighting efficiency of the French troops.

In 1813, Grenier again joined the French forces, was given command of the 31st division, and first covered Wittenberg , and then, under the chief command of the Viceroy , led military operations against the Austrians in Italy [2] .

After the fall of Napoleon, Grenier devoted himself to the service of Louis XVIII , was elected a member of the Chamber of Deputies from the Moselle department and became its vice president. After Napoleon's second abdication of the throne, Grenier was a member of the government commission, which ceased operations upon the return of Louis, and after that he was out of office until his death in Saarlouis on April 18, 1827. Subsequently, his name was embossed on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris .
