About the Cathedral
In 1111, the Synod of Rathbrassil Synod of Rathbrassil decided that the Church of St. Mary would become the cathedral of the Limerick Diocese.
The church was founded in 1168 on the site of the palace, donated by the last king of Munster, Domnall Mor Wa Briane . Experts believe that partially preserved elements of the palace were included in the structure of the cathedral. The door on the western facade stands out especially - presumably it was the main entrance to the palace. [one]
The tower was attached to the cathedral in the XIV century and reaches a height of about 36.5 m .
During the Reformation, the cathedral became the property of the newly formed Anglican Church of Ireland.
It is one of the two cathedrals of Limerick, the second is the Catholic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist .
