Warriors in sailors or Sailor Warriors ( セ ー ラ ー 戦 士 Se: ra: Senshi ) - a view of characters in the Sailor Moon metaseries. The name of this group comes from sir fuku (or a distorted reading of " sailor fuku "), such as a Japanese school uniform . The original term Sailor Senshi is a combination of English and Japanese , where sensi can mean “soldier” or “warrior”. For the first time, the term was used by the creator of the series, Naoko Takeuchi, and gained distribution among fans who speak both languages. Among Russian-speaking fans, Sailor Senshi is used in a distorted reading. The translation of “Sailor Warrior” is also widely used, but not only by fans: this name also appeared in musicals . In the game series, the word "sensi" is translated as "keeper". Other titles include Sailor Scouts (an option came from the translation of DiC into English), Sailor Soldiers, or simply Sailors.
Warriors in sailors, like all classic witch girls , have two forms: normal and magical. Each warrior has a sequence of transformations that gives her clothes of his own color and his own kind of elemental attacks; [1] they receive these forces from an object called a “ sailor crystal, ” which is said to be inside each of them [2] . Accessories obtained with their uniforms can also be used as military weapons [1] . According to Naoko Takeuchi, only girls can be warriors in sailors [3] , at the same time there is at least one man with a sailor crystal - this is Mamoru Chiba , who is the keeper of planet Earth and uses the pseudonym “Tuxedo Mask”. Only in the manga does he have the ability to psychometry .
The most famous and classic warrior in a sailor suit is Sailor Moon himself. She leads the bulk of the warriors in protecting the Earth (or the entire Galaxy, if necessary) from various threats. Officially, there are only 10 warriors in the team: she, Sailor Chibi Moon and eight planetary warriors, bearing the names of the planets of the solar system , including Pluto and excluding the Earth .
Team of sailor soldiers
Warriors in sailors are often themselves divided into subcommands, related both to their age and responsibilities, as warriors. According to the plot, it is always clear which of the soldiers belongs to which group, since they try to work separately, so the difference itself is rarely spoken directly. The official names that exist for distinguishing between groups are “guardian warriors” and “external warriors”. Russian-speaking fans usually use the non-canonical term "internal warriors" for the first group.
Musicals use the terms naibu taiyōkei yon senshi (“four warriors of the inner solar system”) and gaibu taiyōkei yon senshi (“four warriors of the inner solar system”), but other terms of the series do not observe such terms.
Sailor Moon and Sailor Baby , despite the fact that they are soldiers in sailors, are not included in the units. In the manga, Sailor Baby is part of her own team, consisting of her and a sailor quartet . Although usually a quartet is not included in the sailors team, since they, like Baby, came from the 30th century, but, unlike her, they rarely join warriors in sailors in the present.
Inner Warriors
Internal Warriors ( Guardian Senshi guardian warriors, the term “internal warriors” was never used in the original works) - this is the four warriors who are the closest defenders of Sailor Moon. They bear the names of the planets of the solar system closest to Earth. These are Mercury , Venus , Mars and Jupiter . Together with Sailor Moon they make up the classic sentai (superhero squad) and are the main characters in the series of works. In the manga, the full name of their group sounds like “The Four Warrior Guardian Gods” ( 四 守護神 の 戦 士 ён сю syu: gosinin no sansi ) [4] , but is rarely used.
The plot tells that in their past lives, these four were the defenders of Princess Serenity from her very birth and lived with her in the Moon Kingdom - the Silver Millennium. When their utopian life was destroyed, five were reborn on Earth in the 20th century as Usagi Tsukino ( Sailor Moon ) and her best friends: Ami Mizuno ( Sailor Mercury ), Ray Hino ( Sailor Mars ), Makoto Kino ( Sailor Jupiter ) and Minako Aino ( Sailor Venus ). They were 14 years old when the main story began [5] .
In most cases, internal warriors are portrayed more connected with ordinary life and with the world in general than external ones. Despite the fact that there are times when this is not the case, there is a tendency that they are more open, stupid and trusting to help from outside. If possible, they always try to save everyone they can. Each of them has accessories that they use in battle, but they are not so important and not so connected with their forces as those of the Outer Warriors. Guardian warriors are also weaker and less mature; nevertheless, often thanks to their compassion and perseverance, and not their strength, victory is achieved.
In modern astronomy, the division of the planets of the solar system into external and internal occurs according to the meteorite belt and the change of planet type from the earth group to gas giants . Such a classification refers Jupiter to the outer planets, although Sailor Jupiter in the works is an internal warrior.
Outside Warriors
External warriors, whose duty is to protect the solar system from external threats, bear names in honor of four planets located farthest from the sun . These are Saturn , Uranus , Neptune and Pluto . In the manga, they are officially called “external warriors of the solar system” ( 外部 太陽系 戦 士 gaibu tayyo: kei senshi ) [6] , in the anime they also use it, talking about themselves [7] . Guardian warriors usually call them " Urani-tati ", referring approximately to "Uranus and company."
In the era of the Silver Millennium, Sailor Uranus, Neptune and Pluto defended the border of the solar system and were required to stop any alien attacks [8] . Sailor Saturn was not among them, since it brings destruction. In the manga, more is known about their past: their duty was also always to ensure that Sailor Saturn was not born, but when they observed the destruction of the Moon Kingdom at the hands of the Dark Kingdom, they involuntarily allowed Saturn to be born and destroy the remnants of the kingdoms on the Moon and Earth [9] . All four were reborn, as in the anime.
On Earth, Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune respectively become Haruka Tenno and Michiru Kayo, partners and lovers , a year older than internal warriors. They worked together for a while, later they were joined by Setsuna Mayo ( Sailor Pluto ), a college student, and Hotaru Tomoe ( Sailor Saturn ), who is much younger than the rest of the warriors.
External warriors are more experienced and responsible even in their ordinary lives, which is why internal warriors madly admire them. At the same time, they are too absorbed in their role as warriors and do not hesitate if they believe that victory requires sacrifice, which can be cruel not only to enemies, but also to allies. In the form of warriors, they are cold and haughty even to the rest of the warriors and are not disposed to accept anyone's help. Each of the external warriors has its own special weapon; Uranus, Neptune and Pluto carry three talismans, and Saturn - the Scythe of Silence, capable of destroying entire worlds. In general, external warriors are stronger than internal ones: Sailor Uranus is physically stronger than everyone, Sailor Neptune is given special visions with a mirror, Sailor Pluto can stop time, and Sailor Saturn is second only to Sailor Moon.
Pluto acts as a mediator between Uranus and Neptune and other warriors [10] .
At the time of the creation of the series, Pluto was considered a full-fledged planet, but after the XXVI Assembly of the International Astronomical Union in 2006, it began to belong to dwarf planets .
Uniforms
Clothing worn by sailor warriors resembles the popular style of a Japanese school uniform , sir fuku or sailor suit. The creator of Naoko Takeuchi admitted that the idea of this form belongs to its editor, Fumio Osano [11] . Initially, the costumes of all warriors looked unique for each of them, although they had a common concept, but later the clothes were unified [12] . Among the warriors, the only costume that seriously differed from the rest was Sailor Venus , while she appeared in the image of Sailor V, but this mainly happened in the eponymous manga created before the release of Sailor Moon.
When warriors gain new powers and abilities, the details of their uniforms may change to reflect this. In the beginning, there are unique details in their form (for example, a medallion around Sailor Neptune’s neck or “sharp” gloves at Sailor Saturn), but over time they disappear until the moment when the color of the clothes becomes the difference. Lunar warriors are an exception, but the rest of the characters go through three phases during the series:
- Their original forms are similar to each other, but have some individual characteristics. Also, although they are weak, they reflect belonging to subgroups; for example, external warriors do not have strips on their collars, while internal ones have one, two, or three [13] . In the manga, external warriors change several times before finally changing the form to the second form, for example, the shape of their brooches from the circle becomes the heart [9] .
- The second forms of warriors are more similar to each other, although some differences remain, such as the shape of the earrings and the type of shoe. When Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon take this form, they become Super Sailor Moon and Super Sailor Chibi Moon. In the manga, other warriors do not change their names, although in the anime this also happens to them [14] .
- Their third forms are completely repeating each other and richest of all decorated. Sailor Moon in this form bears the name "Eternal Sailor Moon", acquires wings and loses his diadem; on other warriors these three changes are not reflected [15] . This form never appears in the anime for anyone other than Sailor Moon.
When warriors in sailors from the XXX century appear in the second story arc , they are depicted in their original forms without any innovations [16] . Chronologically, their appearance occurred before Takeuchi drew any changes in the costumes of most heroines; no justification is justified for returning the first costume to the soldiers.
Sailor Moon, no matter in what form she was, the suit is always more elaborate than others. Among other things, in her first form, she has red hairpins in her hair, in the second - a multi-colored skirt, and in the third she gets wings and a three-layer skirt. Also, small increases in strength more often happen to her than to any other character. The Sailor Chibi Moon costume changes in a similar way: in the form of Super Sailor Chibi Moon, it is almost identical to Sailor Moon. On the other hand, her third form is more like costumes of other warriors than Eternal Sailor Moon.
Warriors from outside the solar system have completely different forms and the only thing that unites them all is the sailor’s collar.
Other Warriors
In the course of history, warriors from other parts of the galaxy appear. The Sailor Quartet appears first in the manga. They are future companions and defenders of the Sailor Babies , exactly the same as the internal warriors of Sailor Moon . Up to the XXX century, they are in deep sleep, waiting for the appearance of the Sailor Babies, although for some time they are forced to participate in the Dark Moon circus .
In the fifth story arch, especially in the manga, it becomes known that in the galaxy there are thousands of warriors in sailors protecting stars, planets and other space objects. This arch is associated with wars in sailors , an ancient large-scale struggle between all the soldiers in sailors and the forces of darkness. In the manga, all previous opponents of Sailor Moon are depicted as small parts of this galactic war, each of which was associated with an eternal evil called Chaos .
The main servant of Chaos, Sailor Galaxia , was once the strongest warrior and great hope of the galaxy. Wanting to subdue Chaos, she was absorbed in it herself and began to rampage throughout the galaxy, obeying his will. By the time she got to Earth, she had collected the star seeds of countless warriors, whom she either subjugated or killed. Under her command there are many warriors , once formerly one of the sailors, but turned out to be evil. In the manga, they were originally warriors who betrayed and killed true warriors in the sailors of their planets in the hope of being rewarded by the Galaxy [17] .
Of all the planets previously attacked by Galaxy, only one remained the warriors who continued to confront it. In this fictional world called Kinmoku, the most famous of the other warriors, Sailor Starlights , lived. The Starlights are three warriors who came to Earth in search of their Princess Kaku , about whom they believed that she also survived. On Earth, they pretended to be men - in the manga dressing them up, and in the anime physically transforming into them. The change of sex in the anime did not like Naoko Takeuchi , who often expressed her shock state from this [3] [18] . In the manga, Princess Kakyu, like Princess Serenity, is herself a warrior (Sailor Kakyu).
In both the anime and the manga, a little girl named Chibi-Chibi appears in this arch. She can turn into Sailor Chibi-Chibi (on the sticker in the second edition of the manga she is called Sailor Chibi-Chibi Moon). Chibi Chibi is actually not what it seems. In the anime, she is the pure true star seed of Sailor Galaxia, sent away so as not to be swallowed up. In the manga, she is actually Sailor Cosmos, the ultimate form of the future Sailor Moon. In the manga, the evil and powerful Sailor Chaos also exists in the future with Sailor Cosmos.
Other warriors also appear in the manga, such as Usagi’s second non-canonical daughter, Kousagi, posing as “ Parallel Sailor Moon ” in a humorous short story of the same name. Another short story, The Story of the Hammer Price Shrine, revolves around two girls, Naruru and Rurune , pretending to be warriors, along with a guy who introduced himself as Tabby Mask . Other warriors also appear in musicals , such as Sailor Astarte, Sailor Butress and others. In addition, the television series depicts Sailor Moon .
The concept of warriors in sailors has such a potential for variation that it has become popular in fanfiction . The idea turned into a meme in which fans of the series create their own warriors in sailors, wearing unique costumes and often having carefully designed profiles. Such characters vary widely in their appearance and attitude to the original story [19] .
Sailor crystals
Sailor Crystal - in manga, this is the name of special star seeds given to soldiers in sailors. In the Sailor Stars anime, they are called "true" or "eternal" star seeds.
In the manga, crystals become known in the Dreams arch, and details about them are revealed in the Stars arch. Pegasus gives crystals to the internal warriors in the anime, but in the manga they get them from different places. Sailor Mercury and Sailor Jupiter receive theirs from the guardians of their forces , Sailor Mars from Phobos and Deimos , and Sailor Venus from Artemis . In all versions, Hotaru gives crystals to the other three external warriors . At the same time, it is only in the manga that Tuxedo Musk receives the Illusion Gold Crystal as his sailor crystal.
Sailor Moon learns about sailor crystals and their strength from a conversation with one of the Sailor Starlights , Ko Yaten, in which she is told how crystals were created to protect the celestial objects to which they are attached.
Criticism
