In the village there is a weather station that conducts meteorological observations of northern Sakhalin and hydrological observations of the eastern coast of the Amur Estuary [1] .
The Okha - Komsomolsk-on-Amur pipeline passes through the village.
In 1950 - 1953, in the settlement area, prisoners carried out work to prepare the construction of a railway and a tunnel under the Nevelsky Strait to connect the island with the mainland at Cape Lazarev . However, after the death of Stalin , the work was suspended. The railway and the tunnel were never built [2] .

Etymology
The modern name comes from the distorted name of the Nivkh village of Pogobi (Pohobi). The village of Pohobi has already been mapped on Sakhalin, compiled by the Manchurian expedition of 1710 . The meaning of the Nivkh word β pohobi (pohobi )β is βturning pointβ. The origin of the name of the village from the Russian word "death" in connection with the death of convicts during the escapes to the mainland should be considered erroneous [3] .
