The Dakota is an upscale residential building in Manhattan at the intersection of 72nd Street and Central Park West . Official address: 1 West 72nd street. Since 1976, the US National Historic Site .

Built in 1880 - 1884 , this building from the very beginning was a “premium class” residential building, apartments in which have from 4 to 20 rooms. The house had its own electric generator , as well as central heating .
Dakota became infamous on December 8, 1980 , when Mark Chapman mortally wounded John Lennon in the arch of this house.

- Spouses: John Lennon (1940-1980) - musician, lived in Dakota from 1973 to 1980, and Yoko Ono (born 1933) - artist, singer, artist, lives here from 1973 to the present.
- Rudolf Nureyev (1938-1993) - ballet dancer and choreographer. His six-room apartment helped furnish Jacqueline Kennedy . Art objects and furnishings, including armchairs belonging to Maria Callas , a Roman copy of the statue of Diadoumen and paintings by Fussley Lawrence and Reynolds , were sold at Christie's auction in New York in early January 1995. - Solon Vlasto (1852-1927) - American businessman, public figure and publisher of Greek origin.
In Culture
- The building is the key location in Jack Finney ’s science fiction novel “ Between Two Times ” (1970), where the protagonist moves from modern times in 1882, when it was not yet completed.
- The building hosted the shooting of the film “ Rosemary's Baby ”, released in 1968 .
- The building is home to the protagonist of the books Preston, Douglas and Child, Lincoln FBI Special Agent Alois Pendergast.
