History

In the early 1990s, three Belarusian hockey teams had the status of a team of masters : Minsk Dynamo played in the highest league of the USSR championship , Grodno Neman in the first league and Novopolotsk Chemist in the second. After the collapse of the USSR , Dynamo (renamed Tivali in 1993 ) continued to compete in the inter-national hockey league championships for the former Soviet republics , Neman and Khimik entered the first Russian league. In parallel, in a short tournament, the teams played the title of champion of Belarus.

At the end of the 1995/1996 season , the MHL was disbanded; earlier, Chemist and Neman were forced to refuse to participate in Russian tournaments. To solve the problem of insufficient competitive level, the hockey authorities of Belarus, Latvia , Lithuania and Ukraine agreed along with national championships to hold a joint tournament, which was called the East European Hockey League . According to the results of the meetings of the Belarusian teams, a separate classification was conducted among themselves, and thus the champion of the country was determined. In addition to tournaments for professional clubs, league competitions for children and youth teams of various ages were held.

In the early 2000s , ice palaces and professional hockey clubs appeared in Belarus in Gomel , Mogilev , Brest and Vitebsk . In addition, Belarusian hockey was provided with tax benefits , which allowed to increase funding for this sport. The number of teams in the national championship has grown, the champion began to be determined in a series of playoffs . Since 2002, the championship in the first league began and a cup was played. The need for Belarusian clubs to participate in the VEHL has disappeared, and in 2004 the Belarus Hockey Federation refused to participate in the league. After the dissolution of VEHL, Ukrainian and Latvian teams got the opportunity to play in the championship of Belarus, which was declared open.
