In foreign policy, he upheld the humanitarian aspects of globalization and actively supported campaigns against poverty and in support of the African continent. [3]

Member of the Christian Democratic Union since 1981 (membership was suspended during his tenure as president).

He resigned on May 31, 2010 . The resignation was caused by controversial statements by the president regarding the admissibility of the use of the Bundeswehr to protect the economic interests of Germany [4] . Christian Wulf became his successor as president of Germany.
