History
The beginning of the training of highly qualified medical personnel in Azerbaijan was launched in September 1919. In that year, Baku State University was established by the decision of the Parliament of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan , consisting of four faculties, including the medical one. In a short time, a Special Preparatory Commission was organized under the leadership of a prominent surgeon, Professor V.I. Razumovsky . [1] In August of the same year, entrance exams were held and so the first class of students - future doctors was recruited.
The leading role in the development of the Institute was played by scientists - professors: I. Shirokogorov, S. Davidenkov, F.N. Ilyin , L. Levin, N. Ushinsky, K. Malinovsky and others. [1] The first 30 students who received the honorary title of a doctor were graduated in 1922. Among them were also two young Azerbaijani women: Adil Khanum Shakhtakhtinskaya , later the first Doctor of Science, Professor and Dzheyran Khanum Sultanova, a future well-known practitioner. The first national scientific and pedagogical staff emerge from the walls of the institute: M. Mirkasimov , M. A. Topchibashev , A. M. Aliev, I. M. Ismail-zade and many others.
From the first days of the institute’s work, the state decided to organize a sector with teaching in the Azerbaijani language. By this time, new departments are being created, the first textbooks and manuals in the national language are published, according to which thousands of Azerbaijani boys and girls studied.
A significant step in the development of the system of training medical and scientific medical personnel was the Decree of the Council of People's Commissars of the Azerbaijan SSR of May 9, 1930 (No. 287/99) on the reorganization of the medical faculty of Baku University into an independent medical institute with two faculties: medical and preventive hygienic.
The first rector of a medical institute was M.N.Kadirli (1930). The subsequent institute was led by N. D. Mammadli (1931-1932), A. M. Aliev (1932-1934), M. D. Huseynov (1934-1935), A. M. Aliev (1935-1938), M. A. Aliev (1938-1942), Z. M. Mamedov (1943-1946), B. A. Eyvazov (1946-1964), H. Hasanov (1964-1968), V. Mejidov (1968-1972), З D. Mamedov (1983-1992). [one]
The medical institute did not stop its work during the Second World War. The Institute trained doctors for the front line, and also provided great practical assistance to evacuation hospitals. For 1941-1944, the Institute trained 2082 doctors.
April 29, 1957 was a historic date for the Azerbaijan Medical Institute. By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the Azerbaijan SSR, the medical institute was named after a public figure, doctor and writer Nariman Narimanov . All further activities of the institute were associated with his name.
From 1992 to 2016, the head of the Azerbaijan Medical University was the winner of the State Prize, full member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, member of the World Oncologists Association and European Association of Reconstructive Surgery, honored scientist, doctor of medical sciences, full member of the National Academy of Azerbaijan, professor A. T Amiraslanov . In 2016, Geray Geraybeyli, the chief psychiatrist of the Republic of Azerbaijan, was appointed the new rector of the university. [2]
In the fall of 2013, the University opened the Educational and Surgical Clinic. [3]
Structure
More than 8 thousand students study at the university. The AMU has 7 educational buildings, 6 faculties and 75 departments . Until 2011, the 7th faculty - pediatric was also at AMU. But from the 2011-2012 academic year, it was canceled and joined the Faculty of Medicine [4] . 75 academic departments of the university have 2 academicians, 1 corresponding member, 15 honored scientists, 21 honored doctors, 118 professors, 248 associate professors, 513 assistants, 212 teachers in various specialties, 142 doctors and 692 candidates of science. Each year, the university enters various faculties ( medical business - 6 years, dentistry - 5 years, medical and biological faculty - 5 years, medical and preventive faculty - 6 years, military medical faculty - 5 years, pharmaceutical faculty - 4 years - bachelor , magistracy - 2 years, paramedic - 2 years) 1200 students. Among them, 60 foreigners from Asia, Africa, Latin America. During the study, there are 8 dormitory buildings for students and graduate students who can provide housing to all nonresident. Students are offered a sports complex with a pool, gyms and many different sports sections. The university library has about 800,000 academic and scientific literature. Currently, the university has a recreation center "Tabib" on the shore of the Caspian Sea in the village of Nabran .
There are also anatomical museums, clinical bases (oncology, therapeutics, dentistry). [five]

External Relations
In the winter of 2013, it was decided to establish an Innovative Multidisciplinary Center for the development of virtual laboratories in biology and medicine. [7] The project involves Tbilisi State University, Wollongong University, L'Aquila University (Italy), Brest State University (France), David Agmashenebeli Georgian University, Baku State University, Azerbaijan Medical University, Odessa National University, Lviv National University [ 8] .
In the spring of 2017, the leaders of the Azerbaijan Medical University (AMU) and the Koch University (Turkish Republic) signed a memorandum of cooperation. One of the main points of the memorandum was consent to the interchange of doctors and residents [9] .
In the fall of 2018, an event was held dedicated to the anniversary (centenary) of the Astrakhan State Medical University. An agreement was concluded on cooperation in the field of healthcare, as well as higher education [10] .
