Locomotive Stock Base

The stock base of locomotives in St. Petersburg , known as the “ Locomotive Museum ” ( 2008 ). It is not a stock base as such. The official name is "Shushary Stock Market". It is managed by the Museum of Railways of Russia.

The reserve base serves for the placement and technical supervision of locomotives and motor-car rolling stock (MVPS) , listed in the railway stock (in Russia - in the stock of Russian Railways ).

Depending on the number of stored locomotive fleet, the bases are divided into groups:

  • Group 1 - over 50 locomotives or motorcar sections;
  • 2 group - from 30 to 50;
  • Group 3 - less than 30.

Locomotives and MVPS located at the base serve to provide traction facilities for newly built railways, as well as to replenish the fleet of locomotive depots in operation, in case of an increase in the volume of work and the size of movement , in case of the outbreak of hostilities or natural disasters. In this regard, the traction rolling stock stored on the reserve base must always be in good condition and ready for operation, therefore, at such bases, special points for servicing the rolling stock are created at the same time, and periodic control checks are carried out on the technical condition of the base fleet. The maximum term for the rolling stock to be in stock (in Russia - 1 year) is also set, after which it must be sent to a depot for operation. However, in reality, in Russia, stock bases often serve as a storage place for decommissioned or in poor technical condition units of rolling stock that are sometimes there for several years and at other bases for several decades. For this reason, reserve bases in Russia are sometimes called “locomotive cemeteries”.

To control all of the above, the reserve base is under the supervision of the chief of the road and assigned to the main locomotive depot.
