General Information
Title
The municipality (originally a parish ) was named after the old Sortland farm ( Old Norwegian : Svortuland [1] )) since the first church was built there. The first part of the name is probably the genitive case of the name of the Svorta river, the ending is the word Land , meaning land or farm . The name of the river comes from the word svartr , meaning black .
Coat of Arms
The commune has a modern coat of arms. It was adopted on March 15, 1985. The emblem depicts the gate , as a symbol of the fact that Sortland, which has many lakes, is the water gate of Westerolen. The blue color of the background symbolizes the blue sea. [2]
