General characteristics

From Zastava M70 and Zastava M90 assault rifles, as well as from the Soviet AKS-74 and AKMSU, it differs primarily in the type of cartridge used. The basic principles remain the same: the removal of powder gases, air cooling, the use of magazines for 30 rounds and the ability to conduct single and continuous fire. Zastava M85 has a slightly different appearance of box-shaped magazines and handles of various lengths, also on the forend there are three, and not two, cooling holes (forend is made of different wood species). A flame arrester can be installed at the end of the barrel (the same as the AKS-74u).

Despite the fact that this machine is more reliable and resistant to overheating, the use of American cartridges for automatic rifles made it difficult to manufacture such weapons, and even more so, their use in the army of Yugoslavia, therefore they were released mainly for export.
