“Pineapples in Champagne” ( “Overture” ) is a poem by Igor Severyanin from the series “Rosiris” written in January 1915 in Petrograd and published in the poet’s collection of the same name (one of the most famous [1] ). The author’s name of the poem - “ Overture ” - is due to the fact that it opens the collection, but it is better known under a different name - by the name of the collection and the phrase repeated in the text.

Creation History
According to the memoirs of the writer Vadim Bayan , while visiting him, Mayakovsky dipped a piece of pineapple in champagne , ate it and advised him to do the same to the Severyanin who was sitting next to him. He immediately composed the first stanza of a future poem [2] .
Criticism
The critic N. Borovskaya wrote about this work [3] :
In the nervous rhythm of the poem - the rhythm of the beginning of the century. “Pineapples in champagne” is a symbol of time, its unexpectedness and pungency, its discoveries, its twists and delights, an eccentric mix that was previously incompatible. How concise, how bright and expressive - brilliant!
One of the plans of the poem is a subtle, barely perceptible irony , and by readers unable to catch this irony, it is often perceived as a stupid and pretentious tastelessness. So, the critic V.P. Koshelev wrote: [4]
I read this Overture and shrugged indulgently. The stupidity and pretentiousness is terrible ... But something in me must have remained. And no, no, it was a completely un-poetic thought: really “pineapple in champagne” - it really is so tasty .. It was not difficult to check it .. but I somehow did not dare. I was afraid to be disappointed, afraid to translate poetry into everyday life ... Then I tried it - it’s much “tastier” in the poem

The phrase “Pineapples in champagne” has become a symbol of the philistine dream of a bohemian , “beautiful life” [5] :

There is a widespread opinion [6] that Vladimir Mayakovsky wrote his famous couplet included in the poem Vladimir Ilyich Lenin

The phrase “Pineapples in champagne”, like the whole poem, is connected in the mass consciousness with the image of the Severyanin, painting him with a refined, manly esthete, which sometimes came in sharp dissonance with reality. So, the poet Pavel Antokolsky told that in his youth he was shocked when the Northerner in his presence ordered in the restaurant not sung “pineapples in champagne”, but a bottle of vodka and pickled cucumber . The song “Pineapples in Champagne” is present in Alexander Novikov’s repertoire, and a fragment of the poem is cited in the song “Hitchhiking Blues” by the famous singer Anna Gerasimova (Umka) .
