Glacial wind

Glacial wind - a katabatic wind blowing downstream the glacier .

It does not have a daily periodicity, since the surface temperature of the glacier produces a cooling effect on the air around the clock. Temperature inversion dominates over ice, and cold air flows down. Above some glaciers of the Caucasus, the speed of glacial wind is 3–7 m / s . The vertical power of the glacial wind flow is of the order of several tens, in special cases hundreds of meters. The phenomenon of glacial winds in enormous sizes is represented by the ice plateaus of Antarctica .

Stock Winds

A very cold stratum of air forms over the central surface of the ice cover of Antarctica, which spreads in all directions along the slopes of the ice sheet, forming the so-called runoff winds (most often southeastern) - the transfer of laid-off air along the slope of the terrain towards the ocean . Along with the baric gradient, this transport is affected by gravity , therefore, as moving air masses approach the coastline, very high wind speeds can develop in the lower 100–200 m, up to 20 m / s (and sometimes even more), with a pronounced impetuosity. Together with strong winds caused by the constant passage of deep cyclones around the mainland of Antarctica, stock winds make many areas of the Antarctic coast the most windy places on the globe.
