History and Design
The figure is a Bernese standard bearer dressed in armor. On capitals are four masks of the human face.
The stone fountain in 1542 was designed by the sculptor Hans Ging . Prior to this, a fourteenth-century wooden fountain stood on Schwendplatz square.
In 1844, the fountain was removed during the construction of the Nideggbrücke bridge. From 1880 to 1913, the fountain stood in the lane of Amthausgasse, from 1913 the fountain was put in the place where it stands now.
