History

The site began operation on April 8, 2002 [1] . With the blessing of Patriarch Alexy II at the beginning of 2005, the press service of the Moscow Patriarchate was created, the main task of which was to interact with the Synodal departments of the Russian Orthodox Church, church and secular media, public organizations and authorities in charge of contacts with the church. life [6] .

In September 2009, with the blessing of Patriarch Kirill , the official website of the Russian Orthodox Church was created on the domain patriarchia.ru. By order of Patriarch Kirill, the creation of the site was headed by the chairman of the Synodal Information Department, Vladimir Legoyda [7] . October 1, 2009 opened a new version of the portal [6] . Previously, the official website of the Russian Orthodox Church was the website of the Department for External Church Relations mospat.ru (since 2001).

July 19, 2010 officially opened the Ukrainian version of the portal [6] [8] . September 14, 2011 - Moldavian [6] . In December 2018, the English and Greek versions of the site were opened [9] .

Statistics

On October 19, 2010, the Berkman Center for Internet and Society Studies at Harvard University ( USA ) named the official website of the Moscow Patriarchate Patriarchy.ru one of the most cited sites of Runet , along with the portals of Orthodoxy and Peace and Bogoslov.ru [10] .

According to the survey “Who, how and why to research the Orthodox world” conducted by the research service “ Wednesday ” in 2011 among 50 scholars studying religion, Patriarchy.ru ranked first in the top five most visited sites by respondents [11] [12] .
